concern about overflow.

hi bros,

thought of upgrading my return pump from 1700l/hr to a 2280l/hr ehiem or 3500l/hr ocean runner.. need strong pump for my scwd

but i have a concern on my tank...

seen some post that some reefers have a problem:getting too strong pump and the their main tank bcome flooded...

my tank is 5x2x2ft.. with overflow...

if i were to use or 3500l/hr will my main tank be flooded?

i think it depends on your overflow pipes....if there's 2 durso pipes then should be alrite....i dun haf a big tank so i'm not too sure...

i only got 1..

the overflow pipe to the sump is like 1inch in diameter..

then u better dont try. I am running a 1262 with 2 x 3/4 inch overflow with 1x 1/2 inch return. so far so good. But since u have only 1 overflow, then not really safe, guess its a overflow design fault.

1" pipe can still take the flowrate of eheim 1262.

do u guys think i can have the OR 3500 with flowrate 3500l/hr

thought of getting the OR since is lower it watt and also will not heat up my water.

my return pipe(01) is 1 inch in dia n my overflow pipe(01) is 1.25 in dia. my return pump is rated at 6500L/H.

have u calculated head loss?it plays an important role in killing the flow rate of a pump.what i have heard and tried is that a 25mm(one inch) diameter pipe can only take up to 3500l/h max.

anyway it's been running as it is 4 abt 3 mths.

factors to consider:

Pump head lost

Overflow lost (due to design/routing of overflow pipe etc)
