Hi all,

Looking through all the reefing journals shared really inspired me to start a reef tank.

Decided to share my reefing journey and hopefully it can become an inspiration to others :D

Started off last year Sept with a simple 35cm cube tank, and subsequently upsized to a simple 2 feet.

Below is my FTS after a water change.

Currently running without chiller, average temp is about 30C due to the recent hot weather.

I dun do any water testing, as I am too lazy (please dun flame me)

Just a simple 3 small pail water change every 2 weeks.

Tank is looking simple, but lacking the “WOW” factor..

need some ideas and tips for improvement

Setup:

- IOS tank with coral chips, chemipure elite and poly filter.

-  Some stock pump: 600L

- Red starfish skimmer

- Nemolights 36W

Maintenance

- Daily fish feeding

- Weekly filter floss change

- Water change every 2 weeks

- Poly filter change every month

- Lights: 12 hours a day (Nemolights timer is alittle buggy, and without display indicator quite hard to configure.. So I just left it at default timer 12 hours a day)

Simple, tidy and easy to maintain setup. Kudos! Also like how you make do without a chiller.

What corals do you have in your display? I’m assuming they’re of the hardier variety cause yeah with the sort of climate here, going without a chiller is risky if you have corals.

But from the photo it doesn’t look like it’s even remotely an issue for you hahah

Livestock:

- 2 common clowns

- 1 dottyback

- 4 chromis

- 1 cleaner shrimp (Initially though this shrimp helps to clean the tank, but ends up, it only cleans fish)

- 1 lawnmower blenny (Bought this fish for algae control, and this actually turned out to be me favorite fish.. So much personality, and just so funny to look at.. I call this fish: my dogfish.. behaves just a dog :D)

- 2 hermits

- 2 snails

- Long tentacle plate coral

- Elegance coral

- Pulsing xenia (not started to pulse yet :()

- Gorgonian (not sure what species)

- Leather coral

- 1 Mushroom (dun know what name)

- 2 crocea clams

- 1 rock anemone (hiding in the back, still struggling to get it to move to the front)

- 1 magnifica anemone (I think so... As it shop sold it as a "normal nem")

- CMI zoa garden: 1) Eagle eye, 2) Candy apple, 3/4: dun know what zoas, bought it purely for the colour as wifey says please get something that is NOT GREEN

Nice good looking tank.

May i know how long had you set up this 2 feet tank?

biweekly water change, do you experience Alkalinity or calcium drop?

do you dose any stuff?

From my past experience, I didnt felt the need for chiller before, and temperatures in tank were hovering 30-31 deg... my LPS corals and a anemone did suffer...

This current 2 feet only 5 weeks old :D

Transferred some media and water from the old tank, and added bacteria when I first set it up.

I do dose some Ca, kalkwasser, trace elements, iodine, strontium and Mag every week.

It came with the tank, so I just dosed it in.

Honestly saying, I have no idea what each additive does to the tank.

I dun use any test kits, so its really just agar agar

I had a nano, 35cm cube and only dosing Iodine and Carbonate.... agar agar too. :)

Some say Iodine improve color of corals and carbonate increase alkalinity.

Calcium didnt drop below 400... i dont know why... probably no SPS in my tank.

Do consider putting a chiller... it help for corals. I got a thermochiller, save alittle on electricity i guess :)
