NIRATE HELP

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I just did my test for amm, ph , nrite & nrate .

Amm -0

Ph- 8.2

Nrite - 0

NIRATE @ 80 ppm!

I had water change about 4 days ago of , 30 percent .

What can I do to lower my NIRATE to 20ppm ? Not looking into totally zero , but 80ppm kinda scares me .

I had a number of corals and fishes leaving in it . Don’t wish that because of NIRATE problem it all might die .

Seriously needing help !!

I’m a newbie also and I had high nitrates for a while too, but definitely not 80.

I use marine block and another brand of media (cant remember brand), bacter 7, carbon, chemi-pure and it hovered around 10-20 initially. Now it’s lower than 5 within a week, After I used chaeto. I also do weekly wc of 10-15%.

Maybe you can reduce your feeding? Could be excess food, or even something died?

After installing the SKIMZ MBR127, my nitrates went down to 1. I think i have to dial back on the photo period from 12 to 9 hours. You don't want nitrates to be zero.

I’m actually feeding frozen small shrimp (mysis)
Thinking if it might be the problem

I’m thinking if my skimmer is too small for my tank ?

Your tank looks familiar. Lol Reefmax? I think the skimmer is ok. How long have u been using the red bag(phospate) remover and carbon.

If ur load is heavy. U may have to Change every 2 months or even shorter. It may do more harm than good.

I use a net thingy with handle to rinse the Mysis before feeding. The “dirty” water does not enter ur tank. Do a Mixture of pellets and frozen food. Actually pellets are very nutritious and don’t pollute ur water as much as frozen food. (Provided left over food is scooped up).

As ur tank is a 2 feet. The impact maybe greater when u feed frozen food daily.

I was using the same skimmer and It may take more fine tuning to make it wilt correctly.

I think ur tank is under going cycling lol. Try using better bacteria like micro bacteria 7 and dose according to the recommended dosage. Should help. Btw I don’t see any wool at the top. It will help if you change it more often.

And one thing to note for AIO. Check the mid compartment. There was once I overfed and lots of leftover food was stuck at the mid compartment. I had a huge nitrate spike. Do u turn off the pump when u feed? If not it may go straight through to the skimmer compartment.

I basically had the same tank and using the same supplements as what ur using. Did u dose 2 spoons of the bacteria weekly?

Ur tank doesn’t look heavily stocked. I suspect it’s not cycled yet. And please check ur mid compartment for left over food. Reduce the feeding and smaller portions. Remove any uneaten food immediately. Should be ok soon.

not sure about the bio pearls. Never use that before. U may have to check with other bros.

Ur right bro Sherman. I was using the same exact skimmer and it’s very hard to adjust and very easy to overflow. I have to set it to latch on the other end and prop all the way up. In the end set to dry skin. Lol

It takes time bro. Won’t happen overnight. Try to adjust ur skimmer. If it overflows prop it up higher. It should have load of scum like this.

Yes this is the highest u can go. U monitor ur air intake. If it still overflow then u may need a sponge to limit the air. But it looks ok to me. Can consider a better skimmer that can fit.

Even for a day should be quite dirty. I think can fine tune more. Lol

Skimmer is a very important piece of equipment in our close reef system.

Please get the best you can afford.

Got the same issue with Nitrate, was standing at 50ppm and 50% water change brought down for few days and up again, finally decided to remove the substrate and leave the tank bare bottom, and did 80 % water change, nitrate now has been stabil at 0ppm for 6weeks.
