Extreme Reefing

I was really encourage by Moyes Reef -> http://www.moyesreef.com regarding his so call Extreme Reefing.

Instead of having SPS only tank he did a careful mix of softies, LPS and SPS in one tank. And it turns out great OVER the years. See growth of SPS as well as LPS and softies.

His reason for not having SPS only tank was that non-reefer guests who visited his house thought the only living thing in the tank was the frog spawn swaying and the fish.

I just got a few SPS frags recently and my wife was making a remark that it is dead. I try to convince her to see the small polyps and the color (greenish/blue) under the MH.

Like my work (Extreme Programming) now I have to extend it to my hobby (Extreme Reefing).

I guess I have to take the challenge to locate the SPS, LPS and softies in a way that will not harm each other including the chemical warfare the softies produce. It will be an experiment and a great experience.

Wish me luck. Advise & encouragement will be needed.

For a 500 gallon tank the ratio of softies to SPS is on the low side. That may account for his success.

Certain softies are less agressive in their chemical warfare. I did kept a few softies with SPS in my previous tank without any problem in the SPS growth or health. I had sinularia, lobophyton and actinodiscus, green hair mushrooms in my tank. As long as you don't let it touch each other they're okay, but let the acro touch the green mushrooms and you get dead acro skeleton on areas touched by the mushies.

I gave away my sinularia recently as it has grown to over a foot in diameter at the base and taking up precious tank space. Other than that reason I don't see any why they cannot coexist with SPS. Get a good skimmer though if you intend to mix as a precaution.

I did read an article that haard corals also has chemical warfare capabilty especially gonioporas and in fact can be very potent to other corals.
