don't think you need to drill a hole. as long as your intermediate dividing glass panel is lower, then water will flow from one compartment to the next.

my two cents ...

yup, now got a bit of problem adjusting the flow rate, too slow will flood, too fast, the return compartment dry up....haiz.....dunno wat to do, still playing with control valves....

your problem should be due to your overflow. think it's basically a full siphon that you're controlling with a valve. very hard to tune and once out of whack the your sump will either flood or dry up.

there's another thread in this section on diy overflow with a simple but great design. construct a proper overflow and your problem will vanish. what comes down the overflow will only be as much as what you pump back to your main tank...

thanks for the advice porc,

yes i'm actualli using the same concept of siphon overflow, controlling the flowrate with a control valve and also controlling the return flow too....now i'm still fine-tuning it, very difficult to get an equal tune, may need to find a way to control the water level so that it does not overflow out of my sump n flood!!! :D haha

i'm always calling home evrynow n then to check e water level...haha

the tunning is very dangerous because a very slight different might make a big difference..

as in maybe the return pump is 10ml/min more than the 1 flowing down, long term wise esp at night will cause big prob.. hope that helps :)

drill two holes at the back of your tank near the top lah.. act as overflow holes.. use some netting to cover to prevent any fishes from getting in..

the holes should be large enough to let large amounts of water to flow through rapidly, best is to drill two holes..

trader_best, check out this thread about overflow and flooding ...

http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...topic=12768&hl=

hope it is helpful and allay your fears.

this thread refers to a slightly different problem of backflowing through the return pump when it is off. will only partially solve trader's problem. if he punctures a hole in his overflow siphon just below the waterline, he can prevent his sump from overflowing, but the retun pump will continue pumping and even if there's enough space in the main tank to hold the increased water without overflowing, his sump will be sucked dry... but on the other hand, you may end up ruining a pump but at least your floor stays dry... :P

my advice is to either get the i-box or diy an alternative like the following thread http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12846

or an earlier thread which is basically the same design and easier to construct as it does not have surface skimming. http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12591

Ice probe??? Forgive me but I'm totally lost. Since when and where does it come into the discussion of this thread about the diy sump tank? I thought Ice probe is for chilling the tank (although I have reasons to believe it will not work very well in cooling our tanks in Singapore :erm: ).

Please enlighthen me!

Comments are welcome!

OIC, in that case Loadnready,

I think it best you open your own thread to discuss about your idea of using iceprobes. Not nice to hijack other people's thread. ;)

Comments are welcome!

hey people,

newest update: gona drill a hole at the return portion, at an appropriate height(desired water level), so the excess water will flow out of the hole into a small pail outside the sump tank, just need to empty the pail once in a while....this will help reduce my fear of flooding while i sleep at night....guess no one has ever done this stupid thing before right....haha :fear:

I would really follow this link:

Simple overflow

Easy & cheap to make and reliable. Making a hole in a tank is risky and if you are modifiying an established tank you do not need to disturb it too much.

Try to integrated the surface skimmer in it too. I think No need to be able to have an adjsutable surface skimmer. It can be fiked to the setup (easier to make!) You can just lift or lower the whole setup on th edge of the aquarium... (I haven't tried it yet!

;)
