Leaking Tank, Sump

hi all, i am upgrading to a new tank this weekend. needed to get rid of my old tank.so as preparation, i wanted to take out all the LR and LS and the water so tat i can shift my tank and stand away. happily, i took all my corals out and put them in a spare sump....so i filled 1 pail of water, 2 pails....3 pails

4th pail, while filling up, i heard...."crack"....hhhmmmm, maybe the sump is warming up (basically didn't bother)....fill, fill ,fill....smiling smiling smiling, thinkin of my new tank.........

"splash"!!!!!!!! my worst nightmare.....the joint of the sump gave way........water came splashing out!!!!!

stoned and stared for a split second.....

"sis!!! bring me all the cloths in the house!!!" she rushed in my room with about 20 army towels.....

took me 2hrs to clear up the sea water and another hour of intense mopping....

juz to show how bad was the split....

my hand is there to give a rough estimation of the split....so i would say the split was almost 8inches long.....can actually put a warranty card through it!!!!

was this spare sump used before and had been left dry for quite sometime?

Wah..I can understand your feeling.

My tank gave way last month also. Took me 1 week to mop clean and remove the stickiness.

Put your LS in plastic tubs lar..at least they will not give way..

unused tank should not be left dry...the silicone will just give way...

yup, i washed it and kept it for some about 1-2mths.....actually it's my fren's not mine....he upgraded to a bigger tank and wanted to keep this sump as a quarantine tank, but i needed it so i borrowed it from him....

another pointer....did you put any styrofoam below the tank?

actually its not even glass......

i've informed my fren, and he say he'll talk to the manufacturer......

i dun wanna give names coz it might affect my fren and the manufacturer......

well, the tank was left on the floor with cloth underneath it, so i didn't put any styrofoam....

anyway, the split was at the side, in the middle and did not start from the bottom or the top, so i guess it's not the styrofoam thing....the best part....i have not even filled 1/2 the sump yet!!!!!

and juz remembered, luckily i had enuf reaction time to take away my PC which was left on the floor coz i was doing some modificatin to the table....if not, i won't be even able to complain it online now!!!!

well...i specially took out the thicker once....i would say its like carpet....i would say should serve the same purpose as a styrofoam....and not forgetting, i'm did not fill it with sand not LR, juz a bit of corals, maximum weight 5-7kg.....and water, not even 1/2 filled....

i know that it is a must to have styrofoam below any tank or sump, in order to compensate any uneven ground and to relieve any stress points on the tank....but if it not able to withstand even 4pails of water, how can it hold 8-9 pails + LR(some pple put LR in their sump) + DSB (some pple prefer to have the DSB in sump so that it won't look ugly in the main tank)??

bro... 1 full pail of water is could fill up to 20 litres of water, 4 pail ard 80 litres.... which means 80kg.... with the live stock, tlt ard 90kg liao.... you cnnot just put cloth below caused the cloth doent have even surface and it is not as good as styrofoam to distribute the weight of the water evenly....

I ever had water leakage with my marine tank.... 100 litres of water from my 2.5' tank flooded my room... best thing is, i'm using wood laminated floor.... my room flooring all gone.

after that incident, whenever i bought a new tank or 2nd hand tank, I'll test it with fresh water 1st, fill up 1/2 tank and wait for 3~4 days, then fill up another 1/2 and wait for another 3~4 days.... total 1 week of testing, if there are leakage, i just drain the water, or else i'll just proceed...

of course, even with these testing done, no one can ensure that leakage will not happen.... what we can do is just pray hard
