hi,something went very very wrong recently and my whole batch of 8 anthias were almost all wiped out.i suspect that at least 6 of them are dead.. :cry2: my ammonia and nitrite levels shot up sky high and off the colour charts...my corals are all doing fine...the problem is,do i find the antias and remove their body or do i just leave them there?i cant see them and removing them means removing my whole lot of 80kg++ liverocks first...that will be extremly tiring and time consuming not mentioning the huge amt of additional stress that my lifestock will suffer..i'm changing half of my tank water first thing tml..are there other thing that i should do to avoid a major crash?thanx thanx thanx

Moron clown,

If you can see the anthias but cannot reach it with a net, then use a siphoning tube to suck it out. It is a good practise to remove the dead body to avoid further decay and causing ammonia to rise. If you cannot see the body, than no point to move all your 80kg of LR as it creates more stress and perhaps more ammonia.

What I would suggest you to do right now is go to someone or a LFS who already have a mature tank, buy, beg, steal, or rob if you have to, some matured coral chips and sand, the more you can get, the better it is. When you bring it home, try to carry it with the salt water to avoid the bacteria dying off. Put them in your sump asap.

Secondly, make sure you have a good skimmer to remove any unwanted protein that will turn into ammonia. If necessary, borrow an extra one and run two in parallel.

Thirdly, SL sells a pad that can absorb ammonia and nitrite. It is quite expensive though....but you should try it. I have it in my 2ft tank and it has been very stable ever since.

Finally, you need to find out what exactly did you do that coz the tank to crash. If you don't find out the rootcause, putting new bacteria will not help. They may die off eventually.

Cheers,

Patrick

Get a dozen hermit crabs and frequent water change plus AZ-NO3 to help you combat this war.

well if u have a mass die off.. in your case..

go get poly filter... depending on your tank and add the require amt for filtering... do a big water change and let it cycle for a while...

dont add anymore LS in as you tank r now a high killing machine... do take out those LS that is alive and put into another tank..ammonia in high ph tank (salt water tank) is very toxic and no fish/LS can withstand it...

Coral will be ok in ammonia level tank but not fish..

Is the poly filter the type of pad that SL sells?

Can hermit crab remove ammonia and nitrite????

Nah, hermit crabs can't remove NH3 or NO2 or NO3......but it can eat up your dead fishes very fast.........after they are well fed, you can give them to me.....hehehe

Can hermit crab remove ammonia and nitrite????

What he mean is that hermit crab will eat up the dead fish...

but in this case dont do that cause he already got ammonia build up..

adding more LS in will only make thing worst as instead of helping to clean/eat the dead fish, before they can do that, end up all dead and increase the ammonia level more...

just keep a look out if your fish is breathing heavily or keep swimming to the top of your tank or even at the top trying to breath outside air..

this is a sign telling u, must act fast else everything will be gone...

As I have advise you to take out your fish not only to play safe but also help alot in reduce the bio load in the tank and let everything pass first without adding stress it this bad stage..

O no. So sad to hear this happening to you. Any idea what happen?

Better try to find as much bodies you can and take them out.

A 50% change of water will be recommneded and put in GAC.

well i dun really noe what happened..seems like the lyretail anthais decided to commit suicide together...and they decided to hide themselfs first...can see them anywhere,i've been prodding around the tank for the whole morning...cant really sleep last nite..
