Hello fellow marine hobbyist,

I would like to know how your water change regime like?

Does anyone use normal tap water for weekly water change, if so what are the set back and how you overcome it.

I read up on the net there so many different kinds of RODI setup.

1st stage: 1 or 5 micron sediments

2nd stage: Carbon cartilages

3rd stage: RO membrane

4th stage: DI resins.

RO membrane prolong the life of the resins so it doesn't need to work extra hard to bring down TDS level to zero or single digit.

Setback you wil only be using 30 or 50% of the water, the rest you can't use it........

Second set up.

1st stage: 1 or 5 micron sediments

2nd stage: carbon cartilages

3rd stage: DI resins

4th stage: DI resins

May need to replace it more frequently cause resins expel sooner.

My main question which is more cost effective and does you guys only use zero TDS water for weekly WC? There isn't a tolerance factor?

I dismiss the RO part because I do not know where to use the waste water

I replace resin when tdo is 2 to 3

Usually around 3 months

I do 4 salt pail wc weekly

Do you still need to use addictive like Seachem Prime to remove chlorine & chloramine after the DI stage?

After DI you do not need them .

Erm. I was able to hit 0ppm for TDS without carbon. :) but usually the recommended one is with carbon. 3 chambers, carbon resin2

oh i thought resin is to lower TDS to zero.

CArbon is to remove heavy metals and coralin water...

carbon by removing heavy metal and especially chlorine will help prolong the lifespan of the DI resin. Which is why for a 5 stage RO/DI filter, there is two carbon block / filter before the mebrane and DI .

In short DI resin can also remove heavy metals and chlorine?

Just that it will be exhausted faster if there no carbon block.

Might also add that that is why theoretically RO/DI water is cheaper than DI water because the membrane filter will remove most of the dissollved solids leaving the last stage resin to take care of the minute portions that went through the membrane. So the expensive resin will last longer. However, some folks may not like RO because they do not know what to do with the waste water.
