Haiz...just hate it when the anemone moves to the SPS.

Thats the problem with keeping anemone. We can't control it's movement.

So does it sting your sps ?

No obvious signs of stinging so far. But it'll surely inhibit growth as the anemone gets bigger.

Probably need to move the SPS soon :(

Finally moved the SPS. Anemone staked claim on the space.

This post is all about crabs.

Got some Emerald Crabs from CF recently

Got some males :

And females :

P4140033.jpg

This emerald crab thought they were acro crabs & climbed into the SPS. Its been there ever since.

P4151448.jpg

The rest of the emerald crabs went straight for the pest algae on the rocks. Hard working chaps.

This is a 'real' acro crab

No problem. Do note that my settings are on the 'bright' side with the intensity set quite high.

So do acclimatize by making small increments over several weeks.

The system has 2 reactors filled with Seachem Denitrate media. Water passes through them in series. Flow rate is about 2 drops / second.

P4181469.jpg

Managed to take a reading comparing tank water vs reactor effluent after one of my recent travel where the tank wasn't well maintained.

Tank nitrate = 2ppm.

Sechem Denitrate reactor output = 0.2ppm. (Its nice to be able to measure the difference)

IMG_6346.jpg

The denitrator helps but probably won't make a big difference for tanks with large volumes since the output is a slow drip. But i'm quite sure its quite meaningful for smaller systems.

CR media usage rate ;

Last topped up 24th Feb 17.

Its now ~7.5  weeks (53 days). Level dropped about 6.5cm in the main reactor. And about 1cm in the secondary chamber

P4181472.jpg

Current parameter levels :

  • KH 8.3
  • Potassium : 390 (topped up to 400)
  • Strontium : 16
  • Ca : 380 (topped up to 420 with Calcium Chloride)
  • Mg : 1350
  • Nitrate: 0.5
  • Phosphate : 0.02

Made a cheat sheet for my tank (top left table) to have on hand in case major parameters needed to be adjusted manually.

A small attempt to draw fresher air for the skimmer to better aerate the system water.

Attached a long hose from the window to the skimmer. Conceptually, this means the skimmer draws 'fresher' air than using air from the sump/cabinet. Did NOT notice a change in tank pH though, so i think its an unnecessary thing to do.

I had 2 holes drilled in the return pipe as a siphon break. But the GSP grew over the holes & the siphon break does not work anymore (sump water level is 1" from the edge if the return pump switches off....quite risky if more equipment is added into the sump...risk of overflowing

Now I've drilled a new hole above the water line with a luer fitting.
