Hi everyone... i have a question on how to cycle a new reed aquarium. I am using a a liverock but it has been out of water for 2 to 3 days. Im not using sand in the tank. The tank is filled up with saltwater from lfs. What are the method that i can use to speed up the cycling process? Thanks

Here is my tank right now

Well.. Live rock that has been out of the water could have most of its organisms dead or dying, so what you are working with could be semi-dead rock in a way.

You could consider dosing bacteria to set up the beneficial bac population. Test for ammonia as the days pass

Remeber if u use normal cycle technic it's about 40days . But if u use other advance technic of cycle it will be faster it up and it will cost u much more in price .

Better don't add fish until it's fully cycled.

One option is what you mentioned earlier - market prawn. It will decay & somewhat begin the nitrogen cycle.

You can add livestock when your ammonia & nitrite readings are 0. Putting livestock into the tank when these are still present is putting them in harm's way as they are toxic.

That's why we mentioned earlier to test your water - when ammonia & nitrite drop to 0, your bacteria population has established itself & can take care of waste created by new livestock.

Hope this is clearer for you now..

If u want to put fish after dosing bacteria, use atm colony. Quite hard to find it in Singapore though. It's a very famous product in the states and Europe.

I decided to not use those bottle bacteria and used some water from a well established tank.
