why ur sump water level will fluctuate? I always just compare the water level in 2nd and 3rd compartment... I top up water till both sides equal.. thats how I gauge.. I will know how much water has evaporated from the water level difference...maybe u can do something similar

hi people,i heard somewhere that water always evaporate in a sump...but how do i noe how much water has evaporate since my sump water level will fluctuate....????thanx guys

there will be evaporation on both sump n main tank.. not just on;y sump...

to top up evenly ... try to take a measurement of water "loss" per day and add in whatever amout u lost in a day eg. 4lt in a tub and let it drip... or topup.. i prefer dripping

moron clown,

could u elaborate on how your sump level fluctuates.

in any normal setup, your return section (the one connected to your return pump) will indicate evaporation rate, regardless on where the evaporation occurs.

one simple way to keep track is like what siput said. draw a line at the return section and top up when necessary.

You track evaporation in the sump and not the main tank.

Your return pump should be sending a consistent amount of water to your main tank from a limited amount of water (your sump) and it overflows back at the same rate to the sump.

Therefore, any drop in water levels would be best seen in the sump. (If you don't believe me, you can scoop out a pail of water from your main tank and see the water level drop in your sump, NOT your main tank).

An inconsistent water level in your sump could be a result of blockage of your overflow chamber/standpipes due to trapped air bubbles/'gurgling' affecting the consistency of waterflow going back into the sump tank. Or it could be the skimmer.

the water level in my sump goes up and down,i have drawn a line and there is a 3 cm decrease 2 hrs ago when i came back from work, and my main tank almost flooded...currently,the water level in my sump is above the mark and my overflow chamber is almost dry...how do i make the water lever stable?i'm really getting fustrated.firstly its the durso making alot of ###### noise, den when i slow down the intake flow, the return almost flooded my whole tank, when i slow down the return, the durso makes noise again...sigh....its either really tough or i'm just plain stupid...i have spent 2 sleepless nights trying to solve the problem...can some one pls tell me wat to do?or can someone come over to help me calibrate the return and inlet once and 4 all??i'll pay u 4 ur trouble..

yes AT,i have tried adjusting the ball valve, not only the sucing sound get worse, the return almost flooded my tank..dats before i went to work just now,the ###### sound was so loud dat my mum could'nt stand it and told me to do sumthing abt it.i turned the ball valve just a little to reduce the frequancy of the ######...5 hrs later,my tank is filled up to the euro bracings...if i were to come back in the morning,i would'nt want to guess what would have happened...

What size and how many durso pipes do you have and what is your return pump flow rate.

Hello ppl who are willing to help moron clown. If you are in his neighbourhood (which is yet to be determined), perhaps you can pm him and go by his place. :thanks:

Personally, ball valve, air nipple, flow rate and others are quite new to me. Also not knowing what I will encounter as I am also new to the hobby. Look at his postings, 2.00 AM in the morning :cry2::cry:

But I can feel for moron clown .... so some kind soul please help him. I am sure it will be sincerely appreciated.

Thanx guys!I spent the whole nite trying to figure out the problem, and at 6.45 am,i "think" i finally solved the problem.what i did is i blasted the return fully (4500l/h) until the water level in my main flooded over the euro bracings,i fully opened the air nipple on the intake durso, fully open all ball valves and after 5 mins, just when i thought my main will overflow, the level reaches arnd 3 cm above the durso, thus eliminating the ###### sound..i reduced my return flow by a little and the water level is now stablelised.thanx to all the people who have been trying to help me,especially strat who spent so much of his time to explain to me step by step on how to silence the ###### sound. :thanks::thanks::bow:
