Hello everyone, I'm wondering how often and how do you guys wash your filter socks? I've heard of people bleaching them and washing them in the washing machine. And how often should that be done? Or should we buy new filter socks as replacement instead? Please sure your thoughts and procedures(if you wash them)

For my case, I change sock every 2 days. Used socks, I just inverted them and throw into a pail with 1 cap of bleach. Collect about 6 to 7 socks, throw them into washing machine and wash using the baby care function(hot water I think) with 1 cap of bleach. Then sun dry them for at least 3 days.

Some time back, i used those felt filter socks which was a pain to wash.

Now i'm using the nylon type from 100 or 200 micron ones from Bubble Magnus. Its about ~ $5 from LFS. So much easier to clean.

- Easy to flip around to rinse under the tap. Can be done once every few days since its so easy to rinse it.

For weekly thorough wash,

- Soak in bleach  for a couple of hours in a small tub (see pic below)

- Then rinse & soak in anti chlorine for a few minutes. Rinse again. Hang to dry.

I am currently using the double layer filter sock from Madpetz. The external is nylon and the internal is like cotton. The internal cotton will usually overflow after a week. I have 2 sets of the same filter and I usually will change both filters once every 2 weeks. I will just wash them with tap water and dry in the sun for a few days.

Tank: 3.5ft x 2ft x 1.5ft, 12mm

Sump: 3ft

Skimmer: Bubble Magus Curve 7

Lightings: Maxspect 15000k

Return Pump: Eheim 1252

Wavemaker: Jebao WP25, Jebao RW-8

Do you have the same experience that felt socks traps more dirt than nylon ones?

Overall, the felt socks would have a larger effective surface area & can trap dirt better than a thin (nylon) screen.

I plan to stick with the nylon ones because they are good enough (at least for me) & easier to clean.
