Help needed - Convert 3ft FW to SW

Recommended Posts

1. 3ftx1.5ftx1.5ft, 9-10mm customize tank (black silicon) with cabinet.

     - I would like to add a sump tank... but not sure what size is sufficient.
     - My FW tank does not have overflow build in. Is plug and play overflow box sufficient? Any particular brand to reco.?

2. 1/10 Artica Chiller.

   - Do I need to upgrade it to 1/4 or higher or I could use the chiller and decide it later.

3. Things to be invested

  - LED light - any brand and model to reco.

  - ATO - any brand and model to reco.

  - RO/DI water system - any brand and model to reco.

thanks in advance.

Welcome to REEFING :D

I'm going for the simplest method. If you do not have space, run on canister. Else a plug and play overflow box is sufficient but people have people with the air clog in the box.

Your chiller is enough since you do not have additional water volume from the sump.

LED Light (MaxSpec,Zetlight) I go for timer to help to save long term running cost and maybe more spectrum.

Anyway the best investment is to actually custom make a new tank/cabinet/sump (To me) Or get a second hand tank.

Pretty sure you can get very cheap price rather than worry about leak here and there.

It's even cheaper than a 1/4 attica chiller. :P

Welcome to the salty side.

I was previously into freshwater planted tank of the exact same dimension & converted it to saltwater with overflow & sump.

You can refer to my earlier thread of the conversion process & equipment used. That could answer some of your queries. http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/topic/128995-my-slice-of-nature/

Sump - go as big as it can fit your cabinet.

Chiller - you can start with your current 1/10HP Artica chiller if it has served your well for your FW tank. The sump will add an incremental 40L or so. Decide later if you need to upsize the chiller.

ATO - Best one i've seen is Tunze Osmolator Universal 3155. A good cheaper option is JBJ ATO

RO/DI - Can get from Madpetz. This is a popular model. http://www.madpetz.com.sg//index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=&products_id=91

The life of the cartridge really depends on your usage. As a rough guide, change the carbon & sediment filter set once a year or when chlorine is detectable (think it's around $25 for the set). RO membrane every 2 sets of sediments filter = about 2 years. DI resin refill every 6 months or when TDS is 'high'.
