Sohal Tang Died

Recommended Posts

I got my sohal tang.

2nd day, it started to have white spots!

Third day, it is full of white spots! Wanted to get it out for treatment but it is too elusive. The 4th morning died! :nuke:

Possible reasons:

1. It has parasites when I first bought it

2. It is stresses out during the transfer to my tank

3. I do not have a lots of live rock (see attached picture)

It is a very difficult fish to keep? My blue and yellow tang are living fine for the past 6 months leh?

By the way, it does not seems to feed too.

sohal not easy to keep..

water parameters must be good.

alot factors come into play..

could be source, tank parameters..

sometimes depend on luck where u purchase the LS..

Actually sohal tang is relatively easy to keep.... Where did you bought your sohal.... BTW sohal can be abit difficult to feed but once they do, this fish is an ease. Anyway care must be taken when you choose any tang.. make sure that their mouth is not injure or else they wun feed at all...

Ya. where did u buy it from? I saw many in one of the shipment not long ago from a famous LFs. I waited a week and go back to see, the balance mostly sick already. I really pity those Sohal, a fish that needs 180gal of water being squeeze in those messy small tank. I won't pay $60 for a fish like that. It's like playing BIG/SMALL. Chances of surviving half half.

So I bought mine from ML. Look promising and healthy. I didn't give it big space for swimming. But it's already stable, in my tank with YT and PT too.

Your tank looks clean and new. Is your tank run-in enough for a Sohal or for the matter, any tangs? Considering that tangs are prone to ick, water must be quite matured.

If you are considering buying tangs in the future, I won't recommend Sohal as the first. It will grow big and agressive. :)

I think (marine) therefore I am

Oh. The picture is taken few months ago. My tank is about 7 months old already. The picture is to show my live rock configuration.

I might add some more live rock to the left of the tank since I noticed that my Tangs like to sleep in more confined places, i.e. if the cave is too big, it do not like it.

Before I gotten the Sohal last week, I had yellow and blue for about 4 months already. They are doing fine. ;)

No more sohal for me at this moment...

Anyway, I just bought a naso tang yesterday from sea life when I go there to see see look look. Seems that my yellow tang is slightly agressive to it.

How big is your tank... it seem that you are buying tangs non- stop <_<

Why so angry???

My tank is 5' x 2' x 2.5', is there a problem?

I chose yellow, blue and naso because literatures stated that they r peaceful and relatively easy to keep.

Wow.. that's a big tank. Good enough for Sohal.

Do you have an updated pic of your tank? It looks quite empty. Your tank should allow you to create a very nice scaping. Stack up more LRs. If $ isn't a big issue, get the fiji rocks. Don't get those LRs with dirt and algae on it. Just my opinion. Hopefully dont get flamed. ;)

$ is always an issue...

I still getting LR but slowly since I am having fishes and do not want a surge in nitrate. Treating LR as fishes too.

Anyway, I am worry that new LR will bring me new mantis shrimps! Caught 3 mantis shrimps already. :(

Actually, normal LR is good enough as coraline aglae is growing on my cheap cheap LR already. Can save some money. :P

Know anywhere with cure LR and cheap too. :D

I really cannot tell you where to get cheap LR. Best you buy from ppl who post for sales.

I set up mine with 40+kg fiji, definitely nice and no unwanted crab or mantis. and it's also big, good for base. Subsequently I bought from SRC member whose LR are usually cured, with coraline algea.

Recently 1 guy posted 70kg for $50. Very fast ppl grabbed already.

Most fish act 180 degree between in their natural home (sea) and in our tank, most fish will lose their ease to share or their shooling habit right after we put them in our tank. Usually they don't accept their looks like newbie. :D

Hmm tell you what, a tank that size is not enough for a adult sohal or naso literatus......

Mmm... interesting... u r trying to say that Sohal or naso should not be kept in home aquarium? :P

I understand that my naso ###### is still consider young at this moment but I have checked around and there is nothing that say that the tangs mentioned should not be kept. One source say that the minimum tank Size: 125 gallons. My tank is 180 gallons, I thought that should be sufficient?

Ahem... Dispar Anthias is a Tang Police candidate... ;)

I think what he is trying to say is that Tangs/Surgeonfish would require a larger tank with lots of swimming space to grow happily. Most people tend to stock large Tangs without realizing their needs.

Stress and aggression will cause most Tangs to perish quickly and a small tank is often a cause of it.

Your tank seems ok... with that much swimming space. But it also needs hiding spaces with lots of LR for tangs to hide from other more aggressive tangs for longer term viability.

Think u got the wrong idea of them being peaceful coz stated by "literatures" and they r easy to keep.

Yellow tang is semi-aggressive and it is aggressive towards its own species, or Tangs in general, and it is best to keep only one per tank. It needs a varied diet high in beta-carotene and vitamin C, and low in protein matter. To maintain its bright coloration, however, it must keep to a strict herbivore diet to prevent fading (tats not easy, lots of committment ;) ).

Blue tang is peaceful as it is tolerant of other tangs, but can occasionally be aggressive towards other Blue Tangs. It is more susceptible to lateral line disease, fin erosion, ich and other skin parasites than many other fish.

Naso tang is aggressive towards other tangs, but peaceful with other fish in the tank community.

Lastly, u added an aggressive fish (Sohal). The Sohal Tang is hardy, but susceptible to a disease known as Lateral Line erosion, or Hole in the Head. A vegetarian diet high in vitamins, especially beta-carotene can aid in the prevention of development of the disease. Stray voltages are also thought to contribute to this disease and the grounding probe may be beneficial.

Sohal Tangs are very aggressive. They should not be kept with other Tangs or Wrasse species. They tend to be well-behaved with old tank mates, but try to kill any new additions. They are only suited for large aquariums with other aggressive fish. They do fairly well in very large reef systems with no other Tangs, and plenty of swimming room
