DIY overflow

Currently overflow is not strong enough for my return pump. I know I can add a valve to reduce flow rate on the return pump but do not wish to do so as don't want to damage the pump.

Also, overflow flow rate tends to fluctuate up and down.

Had a few occasions when the overflow failed completely resulting in pump run dry.

Really at wits end so would much rather pay someone build a new set for me :(

your down flow may not be able to cope with you return pump.

1) return pump flow is to strong

2) downflow pipe is too small

Maybe you can advise what down flow pipe you using and the return pump flow rate

u need to add a control valve on the overlfow pipe to the sump, this valve is a MUST.. because there is very difficut for you to get the right flowrate IN & OUT between the overlow pipe and return pump... dont add the valve on the return pump, just 1 control valve on the overflow pipe will solve your problem

Hmm I currently do have one control valve on the overflow pipe. However, the overflow pipe flowrate does not seem fast enough for the return pump, so I leave it fully open all the time.

If I close it, it would only serve to make the situation worse?

In this case, it mean that your return pump is too high. Reason because your overflow pipe was too small in size, since you cannot change the pipe, but u can change the pump to a lower flow rate. As long as the flow is 5 time and more over turn your total tank capacity, it should b fine.

High flow rate or too many times turn over doesn't mean good... Too fast flow rate your sump water flow too fast, the bb cannot fully settle down and grow, sane as in your main tank.

High flow rate or too many times turn over doesn't mean good... Too fast flow rate your sump water flow too fast, the bb cannot fully settle down and grow, sane as in your main tank.

Return pump is a Rio 17HF - 4,600l/h

Overflow pipe internal diameter is around 32mm, external around 38mm.

To be honest, I bought this tank with the overflow piping so I'm not the one who built it.

my advise, replace a pump as your RIO 4,600L/H is too powerfull for the down flow. You should get a flow rate @ 2000-2500 max and that will able solve your "sump to go dry".

you don't need any valve for your pipings......

Alternatively, run a 2 outlet output from your return pump, one straight to tank and another return to sump. Install a valve for the latter and adjust accordingly until smooth flow is achieved from overflow pipe, with some allowance. No need to change pump. The other output can also link to any reactors you might have.

Am having some issues w the DIY overflow piping on my tank. Currently at wit's end trying to solve it.

Anyone willing to help me make a new set of overflow piping? Will be willing to pay a good sum.

Do post a pic of your overflow system. Its very strange that 30mm down pipe cant handle 4600l/hr flow. I am using just a single 30mm downpipe and i an using 12k + 5k return pumps. My guess is there could be trapped air inside the downpipe which results in the slow flow.

Agreed, my 6ft using 10000l/h pump, the overflow pipe also 32mm, no problem,

Hmmm maybe post some pictures for us to see what the issues may be? DIY overflow pipe meaning those siphon type or ? Think there are some ready made ones out there like Skimz brand overflow box which I'm using.

Fresh fishes and inverts! What's next? To the salty side of marine of course!:)

For DIY overflow, not the full waterflow from pipe diameter is achieved. At best slightly more than half the diameter of pipe, definitely not fully, unless you increase the pipe size for the last section before it flow to your sump. My all thru 25mm DIY overflow cannot take the full pump capacity of an ehiem 1260.
