It might still be ok, can you be sure if it is black of dark brown? Anyway, you might like to grow some plants as your sandbed might be too thick... instead of exporting nutrients, you might be factory-produce Hydrogen Sulphide which is even more toxic than Ammonia..

The black colouration is a sign that your deep sand bed is maturing. Leave it be. Nothing to be worried about. Hydrogen sulphide buildup does not occur as rapid as you think.

Always something more important than fish.
