Replacement of biosphere and bacteria king

Is there a need to replace biosphere and bacteria king once they turn brownish in colour? Any indication when they have outlived their useful lifespan or are they to be used indefinitely?

For bio sphere...They will become smaller and smaller as time pass by. Just top up every six mths will do.

For bacteria king... what?! King you also dare to change oh?

I thought the key is to house the bacteria colony only? I have recently bought bacteria king from a TOTQ reefer, whose bacteria king has been in his sump for 3 years. I believe that the longer the better, right? Rather than if I use totally new bacteria king media to start cycling, I used his for my new tank. I believe my cycle would be cut short by a lot of time too.
But now that I read you all advising bacteria king to be replaced? or top ups? Is it really necessary?
I'm new to this, please advise me correctly, yah? Thanks.

Did u bought the media in a dry state? Will bb survive without water(from his tank to ur tank)?

Nope! He removed from his sump tank to pass me on the day of collection. I got it from him in pail with his saltwater. So all BB should still be valid.
The issue is, is there a need to replace, or top up bacteria king?
