Hi

Realized that my magnesium have been dropping pretty fast

Now around 1170...

If I managed to increase to 1200, the next day will drop to 1170

Tank is mainly LPS.... is this normal that they use up mg pretty fast?

I have been trying very hard to increase to 1300....how do I do that?

I can even finish a 500ml bottle of Mg liquid within 4 days... But Mg still can't be raised... Always hovering 1150-1200...

Thanks

I had the same issue on my 3ft (200L) where Mg was hovering in the 1100+ range.

I used Mg powder (Red Sea Foundation C - Mg) to raise it to 1400 over a few days.

Unless the objective is to increase Mg to get rid of bryopsis where liquid Mg is used, using dry powder for Mg is cheaper.

There are cheaper options but i like Red Sea products because the instructions are quite clear. If you use this product, as per label, you'll need to add :

112g x 6 (for 600L) = 672g to bring it up from 1160 to 1310ppm

My perception would be that it's not dangerous to raise by 100 ppm a day... However, Red Sea is concerned that some sensitive corals may not be able to take the huge jump in number. Thus Red Sea only recommends 10 ppm a day...

What I would try would be to keep trying to increase for a while, while observing if the culprit can be identified or it will stabilise after a while.

No issue for me to increase 100ppm a day for me (using Seachem Magnesium Advantage). It is not the Mg increase of 100ppm that really matters but the other molecules bound with Magnesium for instance for Seachem, the magnesium is in crystal grains. It is in the form of Mg Chloride. It is the sudden spike of Chloride that is feared. As for Mg level, it would be just like acclimating corals from LFS with lower Mg to our tank.

Does the drop in kh affect mg fluctuations ? Maybe need to monitor kh for next few days corresponding with your mg readings. My previous experience is when kh is unstable, mg oso goes haywire
