Oh ya. Mine is freshwater.

Pardon me for the mixed up.

Hehe

Haha bro..if the return flow & sump design is good, the sump water surface shd b agitating well thus no need any air pump..:)

Well, there are many reasons for pumping air into a marine tank. My 2 main reasons are:

1. Obviously, fish need oxygen.

2. Keeps ph up.

And yes, the best gas exchange takes place at the water surface... As long as your surface is agitated, you know there'll always be oxygen within your tank... As long as they're not tsunamis...

Hi kenyee, u seem to know a lot. Hope to learn more from u. M new to marine. Used to keep fresh water fishes. As for fresh water, we pump a lot of air be it in the main or sump. So not use to not pumping in marine. Haha..

Ok la bro..still junior reefing..keep reading & keep learning..I read b4 an article that say pumping air into the water does not mean giving the water oxygen..the air pump into the water is the move the water column & agitate the water surface for gas exchange..end of the day, if ur fishes like to stay at water surface & not active, something is wrong..:)

That's only partial truth... Protein Skimmers do aerate the water even though it's pumping air into the water...

Haha bro ok..different thinking of meaning..no debate here..just sharing.. :)

Protein skimmer is drawing water & air into its chamber then exit via a opening..the gas exchange happen inside the chamber..what I m saying is those air pump with air stone..:)

Hmm, shouldt the water from the return pipe provide the gas exchange? like since the water is pulled down by gravity? As it hits the slump water it would break the water surface.

All water surface with agitation will have gas exchange..thus the larger the surface agitated, the more gas exchange.. :)
