Water Top Up and Oil Film

Hi all :look: ... just wondering:

WHICH PART OF THE TANK do you guys top up FW to compensate for evaporation? Into the Sump, the Refugium, the return pump Chamber of the sump, or the main tank itself?

Do you top up with Kalkwasser? Or put kalk on a separate drip?

Finally, what do you do about the oil film that collects on the surface of the water caused by feeding liquid marine food (for filter feeders) and garlic juice-soaked food?

Overflow system comes into the picture to tackle the oil and wanted substances flaoting on the surface. The system help to flush it down to the sump . As for the water evaporation, It's best advise to drip at the sump. just my thoght.

I use ice. Bcos I remember learning during school time that only pure water will get frozen leaving all others particles behind. In another words, its purer than just water from the tap.

Any comments? :D

Ice? Won't the temp in the tank fluctuate alot? Unless you're talking about melted ice... then it defeats the purpose isn't it all the "other particles" returns to the water isn't it?

Anyway... I think the "other particles" are frozen WITHIN the ice... so while only pure water freezes, everything else is still inside the ice.

Its kinda like the once-selling-for-5-cents ice popsicle which you suck as a kid... you know how the sweetness and colour gets sucked out leaving the still frozen tasteless pure water?

Hi eporuve,

My hospital tank doesn't have a overflow. I used tissue paper to soak up the oily surface. I spread the tissue paper on the surface of the water and then pick it up. See if this method work for u. Remember to use tissue paper w/o the nice smell.

Sump above main tank??? usually setup! one of the way, which i think is expensive is to DIY a overflow box to a hangon refugium. Maybe other members got better ideas?

Did you mean UNusual setup? Well, I'm constrained by the built in cabinet in my room. Yeah, might be a cheaper alternative to hang-on. My sump is combined with refugium. You can see the design on pg 3 or 4 onwards of the "sump design" thread.

I'll be posting more pictures once I solve my software conflict problem in my home PC.

Norman--> Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a go and see how... :heh:
