Hi

How to DIY the drip method for acclimatising ?

Thanks

You need the following items:

Air Tube hose (the hard plastic ones and not the silicon ones)

2 'L' joints to fit the air tube

1-2 suction cups to hold the air tubes in place

1 metal valve for the air tube

1) Use the Air Tubes and L joints to form a inverted U. Make one end of the U shorter and one end longer (shorter end goes into tank).

2) Add the metal valve (use this to control the drip rate) to the longer end and add another piece of air tube so that it goes into the pail/bag/tank you want the drip to go into

3) use the suction cups to hold the tubes in place

I'll try to post a photo when I get back

Using the above, you don't even have to suck to start the siphon

Hope this helps.

Here is a photo.

Very easy to prime the siphon.

1-open the valve

2-submerge the short end into the water until the water almost reaches the valve

3-shut the valve

4-insert the short end into the tank water and long end into the bag u want to drip into

5-open the valve and regulate the drip rate according to what you need.

One question the metal valve wont rust?

I rinse with fw and let it dry after use. So far haven't rust.

For siphon to work, the drip source must come from a higher pressure to a lower pressure. Unless you can put the source bottle higher than your tank you acclimatising it in, it won't work.

Why don't drip first then float the bag later to acclimatise temp? I'm not running a chiller so my drip temp not that different from tank temp. Lowest I got was high 26s using a fan which I run from 8am to 9pm. Usually it's about high 27 with the fan on

Cause i scared the long journey from the fish shop home might cause a drastic increase in temperature. So i prefer to float bag and drip at the same time to help reduce as much stress as possible to the livestock.

I would just float the bag in the sump...& connect the drip tube from the display tank to the sump

Good idea . Can combine silentlurker diy and your idea. Nice!!!!

What I do is that I have a tiny tank (those FW beta tanks) and I add tank water to it. After that I put the bag inside it. The tiny tank keeps the bag upright and the tank water inside it helps to adjust the temperature closer to tank temperature while I drip in my tank water.

Btw, how long should we acclimatize ?

Depends on species, mine generally around 1hr. Make sure oxygen level is enough though, putting an airstone in there will help.

Hmm.. Not sure if I'm doing it right. But what I do is to set my alarm for every 5mins. Then everytime alarm rings I use my test kit syringe to add 1ml of water. I will do this for 1-2 hours. Usually the first few shots of tank water would cause the be fish some discomfort. But after awhile can see that even 2ml doesn't affect it anymore.

Wow thats commitment right there.

Hey can you explain to me why is this so, I always thought putting one in is good..

If I am not wrong.

pH will increase together with the amount of oxygen due to more surface from the air stone. The ammonia which is non toxic at low ph will then become toxic with the increasing pH.

Therefore it is believed to cause more harm than good.

Oh wow I just pour like abit of water from those tauhuey container, but definitely more than 2ml.. Do this over 1-2hr depending on fish. No wonder my fish always stress hahahah

I have read somewhere that putting an airstone into the transport bag elevates or intensifies the ammonia level within the limited amount of water. Maybe some guru here can explain?

This is what I understand :

More CO2 in the water will make the water more acidic (lower pH) - mild carbonic acid. Many of us may know this from injecting CO2 in plated freshwater tanks

Using an air stone drives out CO2 from the water -> less acidic -> higher pH

In more acidic water, there is reaction of more toxic ammonia (NH3) to less toxic Ammonium (NH4+) & other components.

In less acidic water, the less toxic ammonium (NH4=) re-coverts back to the more toxic ammonia (NH3)

The extent of the toxicity probably depends on the amount of water in the transport bag.

  • 4 weeks later...

I do very different way. I have a smaller tub inside a bigger tub. The smaller tub must be able to hold your LS. The bag content and water is in the smaller tub. I let it settle for 10 minute then I add 20 ml of tank water.wait for another 10 minute and repeat the process then 1 L of tank water is use.
