Hello all, anybody have any idea whether the BB tat helps to convert ammonia and nitrite are the same in freshwater and saltwater?

Scenario: I'm starting a new saltwater tank and intend to do small water change while cycling the tank. Was thinking if I can put in salt after the tank is cycled?

Just a slight level of salt is sufficient for bacteria to grow... I read somewhere that the nitrifying bacteria starts at 1.002, or something like that... You need not cycle the tank at full salinity.

Haha thanks Angel keeper, I already added the required salt content. Guess the bb in FW is different from reef environment afterall. My next qn is whether salt water BB have a minimum required temperature or its ok to not run a chiller during cycling?

Contrary to that, the higher the temperature the better. Higher temperature = faster decomposition of the source of ammonia you introduce to your tank. It might also increase the metabolism of the bacteria in your tank, helping them multiply faster (heard this from a few LFS).

And they colonize more effectively in a darker environment. That's why freshwater canister filters are usually have dark containers.

Btw, I think the bacteria for freshwater n saltwater could be similar. Prodibio bacteria start up kit can be used for both freshwater n saltwater (as stated on the packaging).

This article also mentions it. http://www.algone.com/nitrifying-bacteria-and-the-breakdown-of-organic-waste-in-the-aquarium

Wow thanks for the link, it even mention it's possible to use freshwater media to seed reef tank. Lol Got a bad thought suddenly...as I already got an well established FW tank hehehe

I tried before, it did not work..... I just add saltmix to my fresh water tank that had been established for about a year, it did not work...
You maybe got to give it some time, maybe say two week?
