Items placed in sump tank

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm just hoping to have a better picture of what are the usual or better items that you need to have in a sump tank.

I'm currently running a 6ft tank with just a few fishes and marble shark.

What I have now in the sump are just coral sand as sand filter, some biohome, live rocks and skimmer.

I hope to upgrade my sump tank with more suggestions.

Hi guys,

I shall assume things like CR or dosing pump is your preference. Its more of which nutrient export method is better.

You can go the natural route or "man-made" route.

Natural

Set up a refugium. You mention you have LRs and sand inside your sump. Add chaeto and a good light and you're good.

Pros : one ball of chaeto can last u forever. Pods can grow and that means food for your fish and corals. Almost a set and forget route.

Cons : chaeto may break and start clogging ur return pump. With a refugium, if not taken care of, may start trapping detritus which makes things worse. Any stirring of the sand or LR may release nutrients. You need to prune the chaeto once in awhile. If not nutrients absorbed by it released again.

"Man-made" Route

As the bros mentioned, you can set up FRs for rowaphos or biopellets or both.

Pros : Clean, no mess. The things in the FR will really do what it says, to strip your water of nutrients. No need worry about it releasing any nutrients back to water column.

Cons : Expensive. FR and whats inside it not cheap. Rowa/GFO/GAC/biopellets need to change on a regular basis. More pumps to run the FR means more electricity. Tuning of FR also can irritate you if the media is not tumbling properly.

Other equips you may add is UV light, denitrator, or even your filter wool or filter socks.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes

Too many people spend money they haven't earned to buy things they don't want to impress people they don't like.

Personal thoughts : Biopellet reactor, Good skimmer and a Refugim is all you need in a sump tank .
