the general norm is bright = 3-5 watts/ gallon, very bright is 5-8 watt/ gallon... of cos it depends on what type of LS you wanna keep and how deep is your tank...

Just get an ATI sunpower 8 tubes dimmable from aquamarin and forget about it.

You can call AM to get the exact quote. But its real good deal now. Prices range from $700+ to $900+ for a 3ft 39w 8 tubes setup. I advise getting the dimmable set.
