Is diatom safe? Cos i have in my tank rite now. It looks irritating and ugly.

Update: Apart from diatom, i noticed there are lots of green hairy algae on the surface of the tank. Are these algae safe? Is there something wrong on my tank? This is my 2nd week of my water tank cycle.

Please advice.

Diatom normally dissappear once your tank has matured.

The algae should be best manually removed. It is not harmful unless it takes over the tank.

Hamza there is nothing wrong with your tank.

algae and diatoms are a normal entity in a marine tank or in fact any aquarium system . They are actually good for a tank because they remove the unwanted nutrients in the water.

They will grow anywhere and everywhere when condition are ideal for them.

Conditions are light source and food (nitrates n phosphate)

Getting rid of any one of these will eleminate the algae.

Let's start with lights , u cannot get rid of light from the main tank, u can switch them off but u will need to switch them on again .

Chemical option

Phosphate removal , use phosphate removal media like Phosban,rowa etc in their reactor.

Nitrates removal ,use denitrator , carbon source , azno3, bio sphere or any other chemical gadget n reactors.

Natural biological option.

Using algae it's self .you can make other places in your tank more ideal for the algae to grow. Eg your sump, introducing a refregerium or algae scrubber which is actually growing the unwanted algae somewhere else (in the sump) so they don't grow in the display. You just need to introduce a better and longer period of light source in the sump.

All in all , algae are a actually good for an aquarium if I can grow them elsewhere and not in the display.

Your tank is going through the cycling period , it can take week or maybe months to reach a natural equilibrium , choose a system and stick to it, be it chemical or biological. Ask questions ,surf the net , get more information on the water chemistry , etc etc.

Bro actually during cycling stage you can off your light to deter those nuisance algae.

Power on when you have corals after cycling completes.

And switching off your lights is only a temporary solution , because the nitrates and phosphate (algae food ) are still there,switch on the light and hey they come back.

By the way , it is after cycling that the algae starts to come out coz the ammonia and waste are converted into nitrates.

That is why we need nutrients (nitrates/phosphate) exports , as mentioned above.

Unless you are ready for big water change every week (removing water filled nutrients which is not recommended)

Nutrients will always be introduced into the water by many different means, mainly feeding and from livestock . So it's back to the issue of nutrient removal.

Pick a system and we can go from there.

Too many LS too fast too soon. Take it easy bro. Let the bio filter adjust to the load slowly by adding LS weeks apart.

I think u should check your phosphates level too.since you are having some lps. They are not so particular about po4 lvl compared to sps. But too high is not good

Keep the pics coming bro.. Your nitrates reading at 0 is impressive. MY tank 1 yr plus nitrates always hover around 1. It may slowly go up as you add more livestock.
