Will Corals be harmed if MH is Too Near?

I have a 36"x18"x18" Tank and my MH BULB is 9" away from the water

The MH fixture is 5" away from the water. MH is 1x[250W SE BLV10K]

I'm wondering if the distance is for safety and reducing heat gained only or does it also affect corals?

Plz note that my measurements are taken from the water not tank.\

heat is the only factor unless you also keeping mushrooms.

But for a 250w MH, dun you need a chiller? or at least few fans?

Apart from heat generated from the MH lights, lighting requirements for the corals must be considered as well. Different coral may have different lighting requirements. That why some needs to be place higher up the tank whilst some is best at lower end of the tank.

Suggest to read up more about specific coral requirements.

Most corals would be able to handle lights much more extreme than whatever we are able to provide....

The important issue than regards corals in reefs is simply getting them aclimitize to the lighting levels....

Place them into the lower sector or mid of your reef and gradually get them up to the desired position esp when the location is pretty near the lights... It would also be good to find out how long the corals have been in the previous location and how's the lighting levels....

Even light lovely SPS placed suddenly into areas of strong lightings could experience problems.... (mine did)...

Another issue with the placement of the bulb would also be the light spread.... the closer, the more intense the light source but poorer spread of light... the further, the better the spread,. but weaker intensity.....

Thanks Guys.. That cleared most of my doubts. But i've been having problems with ricordeas. They seem to melt even when i shift them out slowly from shades. Could it be that my method is wrong?
