Biohome in canister filter

Hi guys,

Need some advices,

1) Is it alright to run biohome in a canister filter? (only as a biological filtration) I did that for 2 reasons: 1. my sump's space is too small to contain 2 more packets of biohome. 2. the instruction say that biohome works best in a no-light enviroment.

2) Is it alright to dose AZNO3 and run biohome at the same time?

3) Is biohome good for nitrate reduction?

4) I've read that canister filter is no good, does it also applied to my case whereby i also uses a sump?

:thanks:

Hi, Norman,

I use sera bio-rings in the HOB. Someone told me it could be the reason for the NO3 spike in my tank now. I was advised to reduce it. I guess it was like over-efficient and I could not export nutrient fast enuff to cope.

What's AZNO3? Is it a AZOO product?

The other threads recommend poly-filter. Do u use any and what brand are they?

i think there are some differences between ceramic rings and the product bio-home.

Generally, bio-balls, ceramic rings, etc... when used as bio media will only convert ammonia to nitrite and to nitrate full stop.

So when used in this mode, your No3 will keep on rising.

For biohome, its written on the bag that it would reduce nitrate as well.

If that's true, then you NO3 will not keep rising if u used biohome.

Maybe someone who has used biohome before could share his experience.

Norman, if u r going to fill your whole cannister with biohome, then how r u going to prvent detritus from piling ?

If u r going to add some mech media like cotton wool into cannister also, then u have additonal maintenance work of cleaning/changing the cotton wool.

Unless u can get the input into the cannister from the part of your sump where the water is already filtered mechanically.

My 2 cents

:)

i think the "no good" part about cannister are :-

1) if u used stuff like ceramic rings in it as bio media, the end product will be no3

2) if u include mech media in it, you need to clean/change the media which is not as convenient when compared to maintaining mech media in sump

3) if u have mech + bio media in it, every time u clean the mech, u might be disturbing the bacteria colony

point 3 juz kidding as long as u don't rinse the bio media in tapwater :)

I'm using my cannister as mech/chem only.

So I can spray the mech media with tapwater till my heart's content :)

Hi Ong & anakjoh,

Thank u for your support

Ong, you're right, I drawn the water from the sump to the canister filter, after it had pass through my mech & chemical filters.

AZNO3 is a bottled product that you add to your tank for a period of tiime, suppose to reduce nitrate to undetactable level. (but damn ex. $40 per bottle, I think need 2 bottle to see result)

Judging by the anwsers, I think is a go-ahead. :thanks:

me been using biohome + coral chips in my canister for 1 year+ already.it's act as my biological filter as i don't hav a sump. my nitrate level is ok except when my fish dies and i can't retrived the bodies. regular water changes, replace carbon + phosguard, + dosing of Cycle works for me. :)
