conversion of cabinet for sump

Hi all,

I recently acquired a cabinet from a friend and was rather keen to convert it for a sump system instead of canister.

Any expert done this before ? Otherwise, whats the best option I have?

I just started and would like some pointers

I did it before. Using external overflow and custom made the sump to the size. However there's a partition at the middle Of your cabinet. The sump will super small if you're going to put it in

So my best option would still be canister right? And external or hang on skimmer. Trying to figure out the best option I have for filtering with the canister. Currently having wool and bioball

I'll still go for a sump for easy maintenance. I just decom n sold a 40x40cm sump which is small but still able to hv a TLF 150 FR, Skimz SM163, Jebo DC pump 5000 n media in it.

Sorry for the late reply.

Custom made will be easier. Got to know what stuff u want inside. Example, rtn pump, skimmer n FR. Get their footprint then u decide which compartment to hv bigger space.

Can tahan if siphon during power outbreak meh?

It won't overflow as long as u know the amount of water will back flow when pump stop.

You need to plan the equipment you intend to install

Another option is to modify the cabinet, remove the center partition and replace it with strong frame. But need to empty and remove the tank first.

Hi Hock Meng,

Below is what I think:

- You should be able to remove the right side shelving.

- The center vertical partition is probably designed to support the tank, so I think you should not remove that.

- So what you can do is put in 2 sumps connected with a thick short piping, with a hole drilled thru' the center vertical partition. The connecting pipe has to be thick so that water level on both sump stays the same. Just make sure the seals for this piping is good to prevent leaks.

- Sump 1 can contain: filter sock, skimmer, FR, bio-reactor,...etc

- Sump 2 can contain: refugium, which overflows into return pump compartment.

Bro tunicate idea is good. But I will suggest the connecting pipe be near the cabinet front

rather then at the rear.

This is to cater for future maintenace ease like leak
