melvin84
Can I use coral chips as calcium supplement without calcium reactor? Or can I use calcium reactor media as calcium reactor without using the reactor? Thank you

tofubox
Hi Mel i get what your trying to ask. The answer is no. A calcium reactor works by having a co2 and ph controller connected to it. The reactor serve to allow the co2 that is connected and controlled via the ph controller to break down the coral chips/ calcium media into usable calcium for the tank. The coral chip and calcium media by its own will have no benefit to the tank as it wont be broken down by co2. +1 bro ashwin, dosing calcium supplement will be easier if you dont want to run a reactor. melvin84
Hi, thank you! Just thinking about it as I have d media and no space to use CR. So was toying with the idea of using it just by itself. Or even add as sandbed as the media r seashells or coral chips? (I think it is)
SRC Member solasido Posted May 11, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted May 11, 2014 Just adding a bit more detail. The one that dissolve calcium carbonate substance e.g. coral chips is actually acidity. CO2 make the water acid (by which in the chemical reaction releases H+ that makes the water acid) but it has to be done in the reactor otherwise the marine live stock which use to live with ph around 8 will not survive. In marine tank, our ph around 8 will not dissolve coral chips since it is alkaline (not acid). Coral chips is used in fresh water fish tank tp buffer PH. It happens when PH in the tank becomes acid (PH below 7) and hence starts resolving the chips slowly releasing the the make up components like calcium, carbonate, mg, phosphate, etc. The carbonate will help to bring the PH up slightly (the buffering effect).
