Adding new sand.

Hi guys. Was just wondering. Lets say i already have an existing tank, and decided that i would like to add a few more BRAND NEW sands, can i mix them in together in the DT? taking into consideration that the new sands are not cycled yet. Will it affect the water parameters? Or it cannot be done at all? Cheers!

Not a problem, during your water change, wash the sand with the old water and then off all your wavemaker and slowly small cup by small cup add the new sand onto the dt. Dont forget to switch on your wavemaker after that. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk

Add in slowly shd not pose any problem..I have added a few time in view of some area not enough sand and no issue..cheers

The last time I did that I washed the sand thoroughly, put the sand in a clean plastic bag, lower in to tank and cut the bag up. But do switch off your power heads to further prevent a sand storm.

If your tank is well establish, please dont try to stir up your old sand bed when trying to mix in the new sand. Recipe for disaster. If new tank, few months only. No problem!

If you add live sand, then add it slowly . Choose one part of the aquarium and move the sand over. Place the new live sand in the cleared spot. Adding new sand on old sand can trap excess detritus. It also can kill the little critters that are use to the ph of the old sand (new sand will create different ph zones, as well as ammonia pockets from die off). By seperating the sand you are allowing the new sand to equallize with the rest of the old sand (removing possible harm from sand sifters). Even if the new sand is not LS it is a good practice to follow.
