SRC Member LittleBurger Posted April 5, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted April 5, 2014 Maybe u can reduce yr carbon dosing? So fast fish die? No enough oxygen due skimmer not running and bacteria colony competes for oxygen? The pump u have has an internal circuit board, which I was told has a high failure rate. My assumption is tats why production has stopped for these models. Quote Tank size:36"x36"x24" Return pump" 2x Reef Octo 5000 Skimmer:BK Double Cone 200 on Reef Octopus DC 5500s. SRC Member james72 Posted April 5, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted April 5, 2014 Bro vtec is correct, carbon dosing is dangerous when skimmer is down due to the bacteria growth will consume the oxygen in the water rapidly. Always standby portable air pumps for emergency purposes, can use it during power failure or like your case skimmer pump failure. Other ways of getting oxygen to tank is by raising your wavemaker near to water surface and deliberately let the air suck in from surface to blow into the tank. Carbon dosing is effective but I still prefer the old school way through refugium nutrients export Also you might want to consider getting good quality reliable pumps for critical services. I know many ehiem users running for more than 8 years without failure. That's the kind of reliability we need to match the effort we put into the tank and to the living things we are responsible for. SRC Member ASHWIN Posted April 5, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 5, 2014 Loripes come find me. Can spare you a frag. Green Mille can be found anytime. No fear. Sorry didn't know you went mixed reef liao. Anyway a thought just rang in my head. Have you heard of Seachem Purigen? Go buy that if you cannot get into Sg to replace your pump. Using that with water changes is as good as using skimmer. It will help lower your nitrates. Nano reefers use that a lot in US. I also use that in my smaller tanks last time. xiggie
I fail to understand, y when carbon dosing and your skimmer fail it will cause a crash? Y did the nitrate shoot up? Is sit because if the vinegar causing a lower ph and killed those bacteria causing a raise in nitrate or something else? Isn't bio palets a source of carbon too? So if u run biopalets and your skimmer goes kapoot same thing is gonna happen ? Please enlighten .. Quote Stairway to Heaven

Carbon dose = drive up bacteria population When skimmer kaput and cannot remove bacteria, and when the bacteria die will release toxins and nutrient to water . Vinegar wont reduce ph much and is nothing to be worry of. And yes biopellet is same as carbon dose , but consequnces is worser than vinegar dose since its constant carbon dosing. Tank oxygen level will be veryvery low also since its being taken up by the bateria. Oxygen low = carbon dioxide high = ph low + its during light off , ph drop even further.
