Should i run skimmer while cycling and bio pellet?

Finally tank is fill up and all the scaping done. Kick started the cycle process last fri. But no spike in ammonia and still tested 0 for nitrite n nitrate. But tank actually cloudy and smelly from the 1st day but all clear on the 4th day. Not sure what is going on. Anyone can advise?

Hey bro, just taking a wild guess here. Not an expert.

It may seem due to your large tank with not alot of live rocks, you won't be getting a alot of decaying organism or bioload. Top that off with the large water volume, even harder to get a reading initially. Did u use anything to kickstart the cycle? Are you using cured live rocks? Whats actually odd was your tank was smelly on the first few days, its an indication that there s bad stuff in there, hence I can only wild guess.

I suggest throwing in some fish food or dead prawn to actually get an ammonia reading, so at least u know the cycle is happening.

Btw, are those wavemakers good enough for a 7ft? Seems so small! hehe

I not sure i have enough LR but it shd be about 100-150kgs in there. At least 50% of them are from my previous tank. I did put a pcs of mkt prawn but disappear with 3 day. Been putting in pellets everyday too. Thats the problem no spike in any ammonia or nitrite. Wave maker rated 13000l/hr but i think not enough as the other side quite stagnant. Looking to get another 2. Maybe i try to throw a few more prawn in 2molo.

This is marine..any funny things will start growing without u knowing why..haha..

Lol, sounds like some super expedite cycling process. Usually my market prawn at start will take couple of days, maybe about a week for it to fully disappear. Yeah, probably try putting in a couple more market prawns to be on the safer side. Once those go and u still dont get a reading, probably can safely say its cycled? Since whatever u throw in dont give you a reading, means bacteria is in there doing its job already.

U have got a nice tank bro..nitrate 0 since day 1 no wc for 2mth is impressive..u using rodi water, biosphere, bioPellet, cheato, etc?..cheers

Thanks bro. I use rodi 5 stage from madpetz, run bio pellets and ultraphos. But recently some of my lps keep dying. Suspect too low nitrate. I took out abt 30% bio pellets recently to try raise up the no3 abit. Havent test water yet.

Can be because of ultraphos too. What flow is your ultraphos in the reactor ? try to reduce it to about 200l/hr.

I using a 600l/hr but i tune down the flow. And i nv measure the flow. Shd be about 300/hr. Maybe i lower the flow more.

Bro nice video..healthy fishes n corals..very vibrant colour..imho, I would prefer reef scaping look to be like AM's DTs though..

Side note, the overflow sound is indeed loud..look like ah Beng's DT overflow style..dunnoe issit good as in better gas exchange anot coz I prefer durso pipe..

Check what's ur return pump?..notice the return pipe is a black Y-joint output..note that the small opening restrict water volume being pump up thus reducing the turn over volume..
