Help ID white stuff growing in my overflow.

Recommended Posts

Hi seniors, I was pointing my torch light into my overflow and saw these white stuffs growing on the pipe and walls of my overflow. I believe that area has low flow, what could those be? Anyway, I tried putting a huge turbo snail it the overflow and it jam up my overflow. Luckily it did not jam up fully! epega5ag.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I did some research and found out that these sponges actually grow under low light conditions especially in caves or under rocks. These are beneficial filter feeders and will actually absorb the silicates and prevent diatoms from blooming. One of the possibility that fuel the growth is silicates which is because I am using tap water since I started this tank in end Nov 2013. Anyway, spirorbid worms have also started to bloom all over the back of my tank wall and sump. Not sure why but i am going to do more research on these worms.
