My underwater fascination.

Always been fascinated by underwater marine life and decided to start a marine tank.

Bought a 2nd hand tank, 3ft by 1.5ft by 2 ft.

At the moment using seawater purchased from ah beng as I have no bucket big enough to prep water for the regular water change.

Tank cycled for about 3 weeks with:

- LR about 4kg (after cycle finished I added 6Kg more)

- 1 common nemo (my mum and I got abit too excited)

- 3 to 5 chromis

Sum: Just dead rocks only

In the middle of the cycle I added:

- Carbisea sand in sum

- Cheato

- Small amount of bacteria after Nitrite started raising.

Other equipments:

Bubble Magnus Nac 3.5 skimmer

Dymax return pump (cannot remember at the moment the model)

Wavemaker x2 boyu

Beam works blue and white 3ft light

Marine life in tank:

1 snowflake

1 common clown

1 gold band tomato

1 bubble tip

1 torch coral

1 sea fan

2 mushrooms

1 yellow polyp

1 sun coral

1 jasmine polyp

1 waving hand polyp

1 goby

1 starfish

2 snails

2 peppermint shrimp

2 scarlet hermit

Most of the items above were from my other half's tank that he decide to decomm.

Very nice tank bro! Love the snowflake, never had the chance to keep one. Seems very active.

Any chance the sand might actually cause a block to the flow of water in your sump? my suggestion would be to put in a glass container or another small glass/ plastic tank so u can fill it with the sand and create a similar deep sand bed effect. Easier on maintenance too and gives the sump a nice smooth flow.

Hmm at the moment no blockage. Heheh cause I kinda slanted the position of the sand. But I was worried it may someday get leveled and block the flow to the compartment of the return pump.

Do u mean to put a small container that fits nicely into the refug so that the sand doesn't flow out? Than dead rocks inside? Need it to be tall as in same height as the sum of just a short one can also do?

Just the height of the amount of sand u intend to use bro. Need not be exact fit. As long it can fit in the middle compartment to house the sand, remaining live rocks can be place on top or by the side if your container is small and allows room. I am sure exxe knows what i mean.

I used this concept before and worked well for me, easier to maintain, and u get a nice deep sand bed for cultivating beneficial stuff as compared to the sand constantly shifting in your sump.

Is there any mechanical filtration? I.e Filter wool or filter sock? Cant see from pic.

Hi,

Fot second compartment, you might want to put your sand in a container or go without the sand, just cheato. The sand might restrict the water flow over period of time. You might also want to simulate a power failure to check for any overflow.

Consider a life reef venturi skimmer, low maintenance no need worry about needle wheel impeller spares, effective skimming and can last you for years after years. I am using one now.

Cheers,

James

I'm looking at either a BM or reef octopus. Found 2 modules that will work up to 100+Gallons. I'm at 65G at the moment I think.

I'll check out the skimmer u are recommending.

Love the snowflake. So cute. Noted on the jumper. I'll be putting a cover soon.

Yeah now busy with work in and out of sg. After the next two weeks I'll add the container and fix my chiller and stuff. Hopefully can get a skimmer by than.

Thx bro(s)!!

Tank view from house entrance.

Tank view from living room.

Definitely need to get a filter sock soon. Too much junk in my sum.

Posted Image

Got a new skimmer, can't wait to change it. Thanks bro for the sell. :)

Found this sticking out of the mouth of my sun coral. Is it a bristle?? Bristle eating sun or sun eating bristle?? Sucked it out with a dropper.

Posted Image

Sun seems tone doing well :)

Posted Image

Think my sister and dad is feeding my snowflake well. It's gotten fat and lazyyyy. Lol

Posted Image

Torch might have grown a new head. If it does. Had 5 mouths initially. Now it has 8-9! Lol.

Too much algae seems to be growing. Need to add biosphere soon.

Anyone knows if my anemone is losing color or it's just like that?

Posted Image

Tested my nitrate earlier. It's at 10ppm.

Wanna start getting more colorful corals to make the tank prettttty :) too brown now.

Oh yeah. Found some seaweed growing. Good sign or bad?

:) cheers!

Looking At The Torch post when you stated alot of algae..biosphere decrases nitrate..and you stated nitrate levels are at 10PPM Best bet your po4 is high..Thats why algae Is Growing.....test Po4 aswell..Btw what testkit's? Its good to run combos to keep low levels of both..rowa/biosphere/biopellets.....Otherwise tanks coming along nicely  ..For the seaweed better remove..might grow out of hand..or may even be some types that go sexual and release toxins...You are right..Tank need more colourfull corals. :)....

cheers!

I'm using API test kits at the moment. But I just bought some sali test kits. Haven get a Po4 sali test yet though.

Yeah. Looking into biopellets/rowa at the moment.

Noted on the seaweed! :) thanks for ur advice. Talking about releasing toxins. My live rock came with a few sea squirts. One of the squirt releases waste in the water. Is that ok? I mean like should I remove the squirt?

Looking out at pasar malam for nice corals. :) wanna get something that can grow on the live rocks and cover a portion of it. Any recommendations?

Thanks clementc!! Will contact u soon :).

It's gonna be a pain to remove ashwin. It's like on the rock and inside. Lol. And there is 3. I'll take a look soon and see what I can do about it. Did a quick research and I think it's the Red Sea squirt. Seems to state that it's ok online.

Noted on the suggestions. Went ah beng today. They got some nice zoas and Zenia. But it's brown. :(

Bought an elegance instead and a blue spotted Toby/puffer. Puffer now in nottie corner. Bit my elegance. Think it will have to go into the sum. What a waste :(
