Dsb(Deep Sand Bed) in sump

Recommended Posts

Hi anyone using DSB in sump here, care to share more info? Been reading up on this topic but seem like alot of different comment on that.

As i'm building up a new tank with a sump was thinking of segregating a section out for it and another for refugium, or should i just use refugium and skip the DSB? Any comment?

I have a separate refugium with 3 inch sand bed. From what I read, the minimum for DEEP sand bed is really 7 inches. Also, it will take one year before it fully matures and gets all the right organisms at each depth. Sand sifters to aerate the top layers are a must, unless you want detritus settling and contributing to long-term nitrates. A DSB long term goal is for natural nitrate reduction, but you need proper particle size, depth, sifting, and patience. If I were you, I'd go refugium with DSB unless there's a compelling reason not to.

That is y i'm thinking if i want the sump to be 3 or 4 partition. 1st is a filter socks with skimmer. 2nd & 3rd for refugium and DSB. Then the 4th will be the return pump. I also tot of having 3 partition with Dsb and macro algae together. I have read that actually a Dsb in sump doesn't work as good as in DT. Or maybe i just stick with 4 partition 1 part for refugium and forget about the DSB and put in a nitrate reactor or with refugium i don't really need a nitrate reactor?

hi bro

just to share my setup for your own ideas. my overflows goes straight to my dsb/refugium. no filter sock or anything. my protein skimmer and return pump comes after it. i do not use any filter sock. all detritus is spose to remain on my deb/refugium where my aim is to let the crabs and starfishes to eat it.

hope it helps. the pods i think will still be able to travel back to my DT thru the return pump.

Thanks for all the guide. I design the sump only 2 part. Part 1 i will go with bio pellet skimmer n rowaphos. If in any case i wanna have refugium or dsb i will juz get a small tank n submerge in. Then part 2 is the return pump. It will be a simple n flexible design.
