How often should one clean their sand

and how should one go about doing it? advisable to remove the sand and wash it in some DI water? for me I just stir up the sand bed and let the gunk go into the filter.

Use the siphon tube that you can find in aquarium shop where one end is bigger diameter and use it to go over the sand. Do this as part of water change as the water siphoned out should be into a pail to be discarded.

My preference will be barebottom. Don't need maintenance. hehehehe

I don't think its recommended to stir up the sand. You can put a thin layer of new sand though.
