help ppl.... i need some info here.... hmmm ok i bought 5kg of lr from a lfs and put them in a pail and a pump... one rock was very colourful.. i mean it had yellow, purple, green and abit of orange. after abt a day, the whole pail smelt of stale drainage water! all my other rocks were starting to smell as well so i quickly took the rest out and put them in another pail and left this one there alone so it dosen't 'contaminate' the rest. wad do i do with that lr? i've already cleaned it. it feels slightly slimy in some areas which i'll clean later. going to get more from aquamart tomorrow... hmm heard their rocks are cured already so u don't need to cure them... dunno if true or not but i know the rocks dun have STALE DRAINAGE water smell!!!!!sheesh :nuke:

The world is such a wicked place, war btween the human race. People work to earn their bread, while across the sea they're counting dead

the rock was definitely uncured. All the colorful stuff you saw are sponges, which stinks to high heaven when they die.

You normally don't need to change the water if you do some prelim cleaning, but sounds like you have a really bad case of rotten sponges.

I advise you to change the water and give it plenty or aeration until the rock smells nice and good, like the sea, in, i guess, several weeks.

Hi,

Hey I was just looking at my tank and this question popped into my head..

You see..I haven't put in all my sand yet at the moment..I think it's got about 2inches..I got some rock in already though..and I see little snails strolling around.. :) ..they're so cute..

Was wondering..later on in the coming week I planning to put in more sand..should I worry about the snails? Can I just pour sand over them? Will I kill them if I pour over too much sand? They're too cute to die.. :cry2:

Iona,

Depending on how much sand you intend to put in, I suppose they'll be fine, otherwise you can always put them aside before you do so.

As a matter of fact, I am also thinking of increasing my 4' DSB in my refugium by supplementing with a pack of River Sand (#0 sand?).

Thing is, my DSB is already a month old, would anyone advise if introducing new sand to my DSB will affect its current denitrifying capability? Thanks. :)

Since the sand bed is still young, shouldn't be any problem with adding sand.
