Ich parasite live off LR?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone advise.

My tank have been affected by Ich and I have removed all my live stock.

Now left LR in my affects tank.

I can see these ICh parasites moving on my tank glass surface.

I'm planning to remove all my LR and house them in another tub while I drain out my affected tank totally.

Do you think the Parasites will stick onto the LR and slowly die off since I will not have any live stock for it to host?

Unfortunately, based from what I read and personally experienced, once tank is infected, rocks, sand, and fish most likely will carry over to renovated or even to new tank. The solution to ich is not really hard to find actually.

Forget about dosing something to tank or chemical dips, those things will work only up to a certain extent. The solution is building up your fish's health and immune system. And the magical ingredient is, what our mothers or grand parents taught us. Garlic!

I've tried everything I could find as the 'recommended solution' for ich, none works except when I tried to feed my fish food that includes garlic in their ingredient. Works so magically, signs of ich decreasing over night after first feeding. Though, every once in a while when a fish gets a bit under the weather, 1 or 2 ich latch on it, but don't last long. It shows two things. One, garlic still works. Two, unfortunately, ich still present in tank. And even to fish I migrated to 2 different tanks gets it every once in a while.

Dont have to take out the rocks and drain your tank. Just leave the tank fishless for 2 mths. Ich will die without a host. Those on the glass may be pods.

The only proven method to ich is hypo n copper. I given up on garlic years ago

Thanks for all the different feedbacks. i notice very tiny little white worm like thingy moving around the surface of the glass so thought those could be ich parasites. Are they not? So even if i drain out all the affected water and leave it dry for maybe 2 weeks and fill up again with fresh salt water, Ich will still appear? So am I correct to say Ich will stay on LR for awhile until they slowly die off if no live stock acting as host? After that is it save to re introduce those LR back into the new tank

Yeap...... I have not tried Hypo but Copper is Bulls Eye.

Garlic.... I stopped lying to myself and wasting money to manufacturer to produce products to match market perceived solutions.

I tried hyposalinity and and slightly Copper though half way through the treatment, I read about the danger of copper when exposed to certain metals becomes toxic so I stopped.

Btw, dosing garlic doesn't work, at least I tried that as well. But with food infused with garlic, worked like a charm.

The reason why I still would recommend garlic in pellets is its the only treatment I know of that has no detrimental effect with other fish, critters, especially corals. Copper dosing has to be done properly, otherwise I heard some horror stories with it. So no, I still prefer the o' natural garlic.

I'm currently feeding them with pellets soaked in garlic. I can only hope for the best.

So for re setting up my tank, do you guys recommand that i can still use back my current LR which are from the affected tank with ich? But this is of course i will be removing the LR and house them in another tub without fishes to allow the ich parasites to die off slowly. Is it save to use theae LR again for my new setup?

Hi Bro. Not advisable to leave your tank without water for a long period. Anyway ich is unavoidable when u add new fish without going thru tue QT process. It seems like you are keeping a fowlr tank then I would suggest u use copper as recommended by Bro Vtec. Because u will definitely face the same issue again after you restart the tank. Many new reefer gave up this hobby because of this issue. I think there is many thread about ich. Do more reading about ich and trust that will keep your hobby alive.

There is insufficient information on garlic & I would avoid it as possible. It indiscriminately targets both pathogenic and beneficial microbes. You are better off using a food which has beta glucan incorporated. Such foods are not considered medication but they will elevate the non-specific immune system of fish by 30%. An example of one such food is Aegis Flake/Pellets by New Era which has 2 different immunostimulants incorporated and has been extensively tested & proven in large public aquaria throughout the world.

Hmmm... not sure where you have gotten your numbers considering like you said, not much information on garlic. Maybe info for aquarium feeding but general info is more than sufficient.

Taken from wikipedia...

"When crushed, Allium sativum yields allicin, an antibiotic[79] and antifungal compound (phytoncide) discovered by Chester J. Cavallito and colleagues in 1944. Fresh or crushed garlic also affords the sulfur-containing compounds alliin, ajoene, diallyl polysulfides, vinyldithiins, S-allylcysteine, and enzymes, B vitamins, proteins, minerals, saponins, flavonoids, and Maillard reaction products, which are not sulfur-containing compounds. Furthermore, a phytoalexin (allixin) was found, a nonsulfur compound with a Îł-pyrone skeleton structure with antioxidant effects, antimicrobial effects,[80] antitumor promoting effects,[81] inhibition of aflatoxin B2 DNA binding,[81] and neurotrophic effects. Allixin showed an antitumor promoting effect in vivo, inhibiting skin tumor formation by TPA and DMBA initiated mice.[81] Analogs of this compound have exhibited antitumor promoting effects in in vitro experimental conditions. So allixin and/or its analogs may be useful compounds for cancer prevention."

Thanks however on the info on Aegis, worth reading on the future tech on aquaria feeding. However, it really proves the point that the best solution in safe guard our precious water breathing pets is to improve and maintain their health. The best, in my 2cent worth opinion, against ich or any infestation compare to quite harmful implication and risk with chemical solutions.

My personal experience with pellet that contains garlic, has drived and kept ich tank-overtaking at bay for 5+ years now since last incident (with different fish). This, I only say, for what it's worth, of course.

I'm not saying garlic doesn't work on ich, I'm just saying there are better alternatives that can have less/no side effects on the fish. You don't see much public aquaria using garlic.

  • 3 weeks later...

Garlic has been proven to conclusively HARM marine organisms.

@vidextreme there are many anecdotal cases of garlic keeping ihc at bay. As you said, it's not a 100% solution. Your fish probably have better immunity just because you are feeding them properly. Just because garlic breaks down into useful components doesn't mean a marine animal can readily absorb this terrestrial compound.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2213228

Read the ich thread to learn why ONLY copper, hypo, and tank transfer are the only 100% methods. Copper is not recommended because of its VERY SMALL MARGIN OF ERROR, assuming you have an accurate test kit.

I left my tank fallow for six weeks, the advice here for two months is good. Three months is excessive. The longest known cyst erupted at 72 days, with the average being only 2-3 weeks. Removing LR will NOT protect your glass tank. You should consider ALL SURFACES to have ich cysts. If you are going to do a fallow period, do it properly by leaving the display tank ALONE. No touching. No adding anything. All "wet" things go in quarantine - fish, rocks, corals, worms, etc. Bone drying the rocks or tank will kill ich at all stages of the life cycle (along with everything else making your rock "live")
