I order quite often from several shops in the US and sometimes Germany.

Shipping wise, sometimes DHL/UPS, sometimes VPost. I have not utilized Amazon free shipping to SG so far.

Best bet for online purchase is to use paypal for payment. In case of dispute, you can always get a refund back from paypal by dropping them an email.

Most of the company in Amazon dont ship directly oversea ,so you might have to use a third party to handle the shipment for you. If you add up the shipping, maybe the saving is only about 10% or less.

For more than $100.00, local custom may impose a 7% GST charges as well so all in all if the products is available locally i would rather buy the products here with local support and warranty. For oversea, the cost of sending the items back for them to repair / replace you is already more than the items itself.

Boss, I think the GST only applies if the order is more than $400. I've bought many things off ebay and US/Europe websites, so far as long as declared value is lower than $400, I don't get taxed.

Extracted from Singapore Customs link:

Goods and Services Tax

There is a 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) levied on all goods, inclusive of new articles, personal effects, souvenirs, gifts, food preparations and dutiable products, imported into Singapore. GST is calculated based on the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) of the goods plus all duties payable. If the invoice value of goods does not include insurance and freight charges, the postage charge paid for the goods is to be taken as freight and insurance charges, and is to be added to the invoice value of such invoice for calculation of GST payable.

GST relief is granted on goods, inclusive of new articles, personal effects, souvenirs, gifts and food preparations but excluding dutiable products, imported by post to a total value not exceeding $400. Where the value exceeds $400, the entire sum would be subject to GST.

for online shopping, shop things that have less chance of problem to avoid the hassle on shipping back the item.

Things like electronic stuff should be avoided unless it has international warranty or if you can take the risk of being faulty and sending it back for repair.

Buying from local shop has the advantage that you can just go back to the shop. Sometimes they might even lend you a unit while your faulty unit is being repaired.

Other things e.g. magnet cleaners, test kits, frag station, etc. basically "hardy" stuff should be okay.

If the stuff is so much cheaper, you can buy extra so that when one is spoilt you just throw away and replace with spare one.

The interesting thing about online shopping is that I personally enjoy the wait, have something to look forward till the day the shipment arrives. It is very exciting.

Would recommand to buy salt from amazon. Check out tropic marin pro sea salt it alot cheaper compare to local stores. And deliver to door step. One of the best salt in market in term of the trace element they put in the salt.
