Hi all, I would like to seek advise n opinion of fellow reefers here wrt top up tank..

for a tank of 60L, need wavemaker/air pump to circulate the water?..need cover to prevent evaporation?

Maybe can share some info of ur ATO tank system here too..

My ATO is gravitational feed by a float switch..

Thanks all..

Happy reefing

Bro... Evaporation is cannot be prevented at all so top up is also required. It's a matter of how fast or slow is the evaporation. My top off is using a optical sensor. IMO wavemaker should be used to circulate the water and mimic the natural condition of the ocean...

A cover for topup tank is better to prevent contamination and Wavemaker is not needed for the topup tank.

Understand bro..shd b minimize instead of prevent..so top up tank best is to be covered to minimize evaporation n prevent dust or thing gg into the tank..

For top up tank need to mimic the natural condition of the ocean? I would think of prevent water stagnant n become stale..and prevent mosquito breeding ground too..haha..but I believe with circulation, higher evaporation..as of now, my wavemaker is off, I cover up the tank with a styrofoam board..monitoring..cheers

I think you should cover your top off tank but not your DT unless you are using a chiller. There should at least be some air exchange from the surface water of your tank to allow some heat to escape. In my experience I found that my return pump was contributing to the heat load in my DT so I replaced the lid to my DT with a perforated one and the temp reduced by 1 DegC.

Hi, btw you use what type of water to top up your tank? Tape water? Ro/di unit ? Distilled water? Anyone can advise me on the TDS reading for distilled water? Thanks.

To answer this, I use tap water with anti chlorine solution..cheers

Hi Martian, can share where u get the optical sensor and how it works for the top off?

Thanks

Got mine shipped in from Taobao- China but the DC pump "kaput" now. I use timer with a small AC pump... Too me its just the same, just have to estimate the daily evaporation rate...

My ATO have been working well..having a gravitation flow instead of a sensor & pump (electrical) is more fail safe..more constant topping up to have a stable water SG too..my 60L ATO tank last ard 10-14days depend on the ambient temperature (fan cool for 12hr daily)..cheers & happy reefing
