Deep Sand Bed or Miracle Mud in Refugium

Hi all Bros

I'm planning to set up a refugium using external tank place beside my sump.

Need some advise whether to use Deep sand bed or Miracle Mud as the base.

Any Bros can help me on that.

Both work in same way.

Miracle mud got more mineral elements for the algea in ur refugium. And the mud just need to be ard 2 - 3cm deep.

I beliebe Caribsea mineral sand/mud that avail in LFS also the similar thing.

Use normal sand to set up deep sand base (DSB) is cheaper. And need ard 15cm (4-6inch) deep.

Both methods need cycling to build up bacteria. This point I read online, but not 100% sure.

But I know some refeers leave the base empty, they put live rock instead.

Does these method work as well??

Good live rocks is the key to successful marine tank setup..try not to use DSB or miracle mud..they might give out toxic after sometime (a few years I have read)..so must need to replace them and its a hassle..live rocks are the longest the better..happy reefing..

I Prefer To Use Good Old LR..Perfect spot for bacteria,pods etc..and much easier to maitain and in the long run wont cause much probs..DSP Might trap a lot of dirt causing no3 shot..but like your question is stated..i think Miracle mud is better..``Happy Reefing!

Different function at all.

Live rocks are for seeding bacterial for nitrifying.

While dsb n miracle mud is for denitrifying bacterial.

i personally dun like DSB, kinda hard to keep it clean and maintain
