Is my Resun Chiller working correctly ?

I bought my Resun Chiller Model CL-280 around Jan 2003 at the

only Marine Store in Farmart for S$ 699 then.

The chiller is connected to my Atman External Pump (600 l/hr)

into my 2.5 ft Jewel tank. There is another internal pump in the tank

and a power rotating pump. With all the lights on the average temp

as measured by the 'stick on temp pad' is around 33-34C.

The chiller will take about 3-4 hrs to bring the temp down to my set

26C. The chiller has a buffer of 2C; i.e the compressor will restart whe the temp go up to 28C. This will take about 10 min and the process

of on-off-on repeats every 10-15 min. To save electricity bill, I have

put in the timer for the chiller to run only at certain period; i.e.

5am to 7 am

11am to 2pm

5pm to 7pm

11pm to 1am

Total Timer 'On' duration is about 9 hr.

Is my chiller performance typical or way below par ?

The CL-280 is rated to run up to a 4ft tank.

Should I stay with the chiller or should I upgrade (if necessary)

The chiller is also quite noisy.

Thanks

maybe you try to shift the inlet and output to opposite side of the tank, this will make the chiller run longer to cool 2 degs so it won't ON/OFF so many times.

Maybe your internal pumps are heating up the water?

I know the atman pumps are well known to be hot!

The only internal pump is the Juwel built-in one (not hot) and the

Eden Rotating Power Head. The Atman pump is an external one

connected next to the chiller (4" apart) and next to a cooling fan

(2" apart). All these are under the tank lower cabinet enclosed with

a 1/2" gap & about 3" from the wall.

Will try to relocate the inlet & outlet in the tank.

Will also post some pictures then.

Hi,

Try to locate the in and outlet at both ends of the tank. If the chiller placed on the floor with a certain height to the tank? If yes, 600flow pump won't be sufficient to push up the water into the tank causing the water exchange rate to be slow and longer time to cool down. U might want to consider this point

2ft cube with 2.5 sump

400w MH with 6 x 24w blue T5

Hydor wavemaker controller

Aquatronica controller

Daikin compressor with double coil

RM CR

I also have CL-280. I bought much less than yours. Also using jewel 2.5ft tank. But i have sump.

Sump water out goes into the chiller and goes into main tank and overflowed back into my sump. Takes about 45 mins to cool down to 2deg and about 30 mins later starts again. The chiller is never switched off.

The chiller inlet and outlet hoses must not be next to each other in a sump.

You are effectively 'short-circuiting' the chiller. The water volume in that compartment in the sump will take in chilled water and return chilled water faster than the rest of the sump and the main tank.

That is why your chiller is 'sensing' that your tank is cold enough and cuts off. And then when warmer water flows back into the small sump compartment... it starts back up again.

This frequent on and off will kill your compressor in no time.

Always place the inlet and outlet as far away from each other as you can.

Hey !

I am using Resun CL 300 to chill my L4'xW1.5'xH2' tank. I used only 4 FL...no MH, looking for T5...he...he..

1. CL 300 took 1 hour to cool 2 deg.C (from 28C to 26C). It only re-activates after resting for another 1~1.5 hour. My CL 300 is switch-on all the time...let the thermostat and sensor do all the work.

2. Electrical consumption hardly is negligible..less than $10 per month.

3. Only complaint....noisy fan when the chiller is working. After using for a few months, got used to it already.

Comments :

* Your inlet & outlet hose into the main tank seemed TOO CLOSE. I think preferably should be as far apart if possible. My inlet and oulet are placed in diff compartment.

* Your chiller do not have proper ventilation (inside cabinet) ...affecting its optimum performance/ maybe shorten product life span...###### hot air all the time. Mine I put outside. Plenty of good ventilation.

Just my 2 cents worth...cheers!

Adjusted my Chiller In/Out distance.

Before adjust:

It takes about 10-15 min to drop 2C! & chiller reactivates (light on)

It takes about 5-10 min to drop 2C! & chiller reactivates (light off)

After adjust:

It takes about 25-30 min to drop 2C! & chiller reactivates (light on)

It takes about 35-50 min to drop 2C! & chiller reactivates (light off)

I guessed placing the chiller In/Out apart did improved the chiller

performance.

Thanks all the inputs !
