AI vega - shadow at the front

I understand from the website that vega is good for an area of 2 x 2.

I own a 2 feet cube and place the light in the center of the tank hood. it is the most awesome light fixture i have and have zero complaint... until

I realize there is shadow at the front ... because of my rockscape. however I love my rockscape too dearly. Would getting vega be a super overkill to eliminate this problem? or i just supplement with T5 at the front.

Thanks for your feedback

That's once of the problems of leds. Getting a 2-tube t5 would be a better choice since Vega lacks violets, you can get ATI actinic or blue plus to supplement. Adding another Vega would definitely be too overkill. Another solution would be to change out to another better light set. Probably a razor 120w. With 2 separate cluster. You'll likely get less shadow and also better color/spectrum den the Vega.

Are u sure that a razor 120w is a better light set compared to vega? Vega is able to set 0 to 100% for each of the 6 colours on the light set, razor 120w has only 2 adjustable channel, blue and white. So why do u think a razor 120w will get better colour/spectrum?

Yes the vega is much better in controllability than the razor. When i mean color, i mean the corals color. Mainly because it seems like the vega lacks violets, while razor uses dual-core Violets. As for spectrum, vega uses cool white with a mix of color leds (red and green), while razor uses warm white (which consist of red and green too) which blends the light better. i personally think warm whites are better than cool white + red/green.

upon more research, it appears that the vega color/blue has the so called "deep blue color led", it may or may not be violets (410-430nm).

The razor is also cheaper while putting out higher wattage (120w vs 95w), better spread too. So IMO, the razor is a better choice here for me.

edit : and what i meant by overkill (adding another vega) im not talking about the wattage or the amount of light, im talking about the price. might as well top up a and get the best fixture, which is the GHL Mitras rather than get 2 vega.

Thanks for all.... This moving house saga really let me replan my equipment list again. From vortech back to tunze From led back to maybe the trusted ATI T5 again. I'm still leaning towards 2 X T5 at the front or 1 more AI because it is neater. Waiting for more opinion. AI has more control :)

How long did u try the vega and razor on your tank before u reach this conclusion?

i know where your going bro, i've never tried the vega, but i do have a friend who haves them. my comments on the vega are definitely bias but that does not mean its not true

also, i don't need to have the vega to know that the vega lacks violet (unless deep blue = violet), its more expensive for lesser wattage and uses cool white + red/green vs warm white ( This is my personal preference )

if you meant about coral color, i admit that i cant vouch for that since i don't own the vega and since lighting is not the most important factor to sps colouration.

Why don't you try adding the T5s? Hybrid gives you best of both worlds. The T5s can supplement the coverage of LEDs at wider angles.
I can't find a slim ATI fixture that has only 2 bulb configuration :) my current AI is at the center le

Ok, u getting me confused, earlier u were saying razor has better colour/spectrum, now u said u cant vouch for that.

razor color better because it has violets.

razor spectrum better because it uses warm whites.

cant vouch for coral color because i don't own a vega to compare.

and when i meant i cant vouch for that, i meant that i cant vouch that coral colors (when using vega) would be in anyway worse then the razor, i can vouch that the razor definitely can color up SPS just like any other led fixture. to make it more simple, the razor is a good full spectrum light that when other parameters are good, definitely can color up SPS/Corals BUT Vega might not since it lacks violets. Im not saying it will not. just that you might have a better chance with the razor.

Seems like the guys at reef builder disagree with u. Its uses cool white instead of warm white, it doesnt has violets. Not sure why it still manage to beat razor. http://reefbuilders.com/2013/01/28/led-showdown-final/

A fair word, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

no doubt, on overall, AI still better. Better built, more functions, customizable. Given the price tag, we would expect it will perform better. Downside: more heat generated, limited coverage.

while on the other hand, maxspect has limited function. However, it has better spread and less heat. Most importantly, it is more economical. value for money.

In terms of light intensity and spectrum, i din study much on that. But both of serve well as a marine lightset, dont you agree?

Well said. Both has their strength and weakness. Both cater for different reefers. Want a basic light that can support corals with limited functions, go for razor. Want to have more functions, money not an issue, go for AI. I have used both, both are good but AI is better
