My 2 Feet Nano's Journal

Hi all,

As a family guy with 1 daughter. ( Pocket very shallow )

My plan is to run with budget equipment without chiller.

This is my second time setting up a reef tank - The first 1.5ft was crashed after a year because of an anemone got blended in my wave maker :/

After 2 years of reading from this forum and nano reef.. i got tempted to start because the clinic my daughter goes for jab has a reef tank and each time she goes , she keep looking at it for very long.

Long story short .. heres my plan :

i'm going to start a LPS & Soft Coral + Invertebrates + 5 fishes nano tank in Nov.

My Theme is Minimalist

Thinking of getting only 5 KG of LR only

Corals - Xenia , Frog Spawn, GSP & Zoas

Invert - Harlequin Shrimp + Star fish , Sexy Shrimp & Fire Shrimp

Fish - Firefish x1 , Clown Fish x 2 , Basslet - Candy x 1 , Basslet - Swiss x 1 ( adding 1 fish per week after cycling )

QNS : Can anyone tell me if the LS i have is compatible ?

QNS : Is 5KG of LR is enough for basslet to swim and hide ?

Current these are the equipment list :

Gex Acrylic Tank - 60 cm x 30cm x 35 cm ( Bought )

Skimmer - Red Sea Prizm Skimmer ( Bought 2nd hand )

Wave Maker - Tunze Nano Stream 6015 ( To Buy List )

Canister Filter - 500L/H (Bought)

Light - Aquazonic Sirius LED (Bought)

Fan - Dymax Fan

Test Kit - API test kits

I'm thinking of getting - Caribisea Fiji Pink Live sand 20lb and BW Bactor7 to shorten the cycling from 4 weeks to 2 weeks. Definitely will do a water test !

QNS : Do you turn on skimmer while cycling period?

Water Change will be 10 to 15 % Weekly using salt mixed water from SL or ML as they are the nearest to my house.

Additives i have in mind -

Starting Stage to get :

BW - Element trace

BW - Bactor 7

BW - BioFuel

After the tank stable

BW PH Buffer

BW Calcium

BW Iodion

BW Magnesium

It's Clear PO4

BW Plankton

QNS : Any Additives i should get ? If yes , which stage i should add for that addictive ?

I hope to get all the answers before i start reefing :)

wow doing it for ur daughter! nice. good luck with ur tank. looking forward to see how it goes. planning one tank with same dimensions.

One stone kill 3 birds !

1) For my daughter.

2) Poison run deep in me

3) To spread poison to my CFO (wife), at least we can share same interest ! She loves Dory ( Blue Tang ) but i think for my tank size its quite hard to keep or at least i need to wait for my tank to mature .

for a small tank like yours, i dont think additives is necessary. Regular water changes with reliable salt should suffice.

I'm aiming for my tank to thrive.. looking at Bro Slapper's Nano Tank thread as reference to build a healthy and colorful tank.

In his tank he also used a lot of additives to maintain his's.

I will also try your method, as it saves money too. But in the long term, can i really maintain this tank and thrive without additive ?

Thank Bro Ang Moh :)

QNS : Any reefer uses very little or none additives to maintain your tank ? Would like to hear your opinion too

Always gd to ask qn before u start as it helps to minimize mistakes. Careful with ur choice of LS, firefish r known jumpers and dun think u hv a hood so juz take note. And the basslets u wanted to keep r not cheap fishes if I'm not wrong. If u r on a tight budget then maybe it will overshoot ur budget. Juz my 2 cents.

I was searching Basslet as keyword and realized Candy Basslet cost 100 red notes * Faint *

Any recommend for basslet that is affordable ( ard 3 to 5 red notes ) with nice color like Candy Basslet ?

Skip the addictives... you wont need that if you keep up with regular water changes.

Noted with that :)

Does that mean if i do less water change = require addictive to boost mineral in water ?

Hey bro harlequin shrimp requires live starfish for food which will create high bio load for your tank.

You might wished to reconsider your life stock selection as with your tank size and choices you might have concern with aggression turning your tank into UFC.

I second that to water change and skip addictive as commented by many bros here.

Noted on all the advises with the additives.

As for the Harlequin shrimp,

Thats the main reason why i'm planning to run a skimmer and weekly water change. Just as i did for my 1.5ft . No worries on that :D

great start, but i doubt that aquazonic lighting is gonna be enough for even a LPS+softies tank. if you got the budget, can consider the Maxspect Razor 120w 16k. (500+) if not can just get 2x par38s with 2 dymax astro holders.

If not a simple aquazonic 4x24w T5HO with 4 ATI tubes would be enough for your tank.

Noted on that . Maybe i start looking out on Pasar Balam Thread :)

Saw CherryAqua iNano LED with Cree - is this ok ? since my tank is about 60 L as it stats suitable for Nano up till 80 L

I do water changes and it does fine. My tank size Is similar to yours, just slightly larger. The reason why large tanks require additives is because it is very difficult and inconvenient to change that much water every week.

E.g if I had a 10 gallon tank and I wanted to change 20% of my water every week, I would only need 2 gallons. However if my tank was 100 gallons, changing 20 gallons a week is really quite taxing.

Also, small tanks have a smaller volume of water thus if you were to make a mistake, the results would be very drastic as compared to larger tanks with a larger volume of water for "buffer".

Hope this helps.

Yes I was looking at it too! Looks pretty good in terms of colour combination and functionality. The micmol lightset offered by one of our sponsors is also worth a look if you are looking for nano sets :D

Ya i got the price from them, you would probably need 2 light set for a tank of your size which is still quite expensive. The aqua beauty one cheaper

for a small water volume like yours, it would be more dangerous to dose additives. A slight overdose may wipe out your tank.
