doing water change after cycling

Hi.would like to know after i cycled my tank for a month, my nitrate is at 20ppm currently. so i need to do a water change from 20% to 50% right? Is it okay if i use NSW instead of saltmix? i saw a few posts that reefers use NSW for their weekly water change. so i'm wonder if its okay to use NSW for it as i'm afraid after using NSW, instead of bring the nitrate down, i bring it higher. I'm using a 3ft X 2.5 X 2 tank.

thanks in advance for any kind advice.

After I brought NSW from a farm in the west, I change 20% of my tank with that and after changing it, one of my sebae clown eye swollen:(I have a 3ft tank and there is only a pair of sebae clown...

No luck with NSW...I guess I better stick back to Saltmix...

Anyway..thanks guys for sharing:)

a case of salinity shock for your fishes. Sorry if I have confused you, NSW is usually higher than what reefers keep their tank salinity.

I keep mine at 1.025, whereas NSW is usually 1.026 - 1.03, depending on the condition it was harvest, if it had rained day before, the salinity would be lower.

in any case, one should exert caution and prudence when using NSW, always check the salinity since its not contant.

Hi bro, care to share which LFS NSW gives you that high salinity reading? i understand that most lfs have much lower salinity reading, on an average of 1.017 to 1.020.

oh. but do you guys check the nitrate and all for NSW before WC? if its high in nitrate and all, do you guys still change it?

i personally dont do that check, but it is good to check it first.

when i am doing water change to remove no3 po4 etc, i usually go for salt mix, safer that way.
