erm..got a feeling we are talking about different crabs...mine has anemones..definitely indo-pacific ones..because of the price. Got it at $6. With that pricing it could'nt have come from Hawaii...

Always something more important than fish.

Dear bro, shouldnt judge the origin of a LS by its price. E.g. can also get a RedSea Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardini) for between S$8 to S$12 dollars as compared to those Indo Pacs (Zebrasoma veliferum) for also around the same price.

Customers also get to hear some retailers telling them those giant featherduster in purple or white colors from Hawaii, RedSea, Caribbean, etc. Yet they are from no where but Indo Pacs Sulawesi too. Haha..

I have a Indo-pacific dive book with full color photos in it. Got a picture of a boxing crab holding anemones. You talking about Lybia tessellata right?

There...another pic from indonesia. Notice the anemones. B)

Well, you can also go online at reefsource.com. It shows a live pic of a tesselata from the Philippines without the "PomPom'!

Go to Liveaquaria.com and it shows one with it.

I suppose it may be due to different geographic locations and livestyle. Nevertheless, both are as interseting.

Not to be viewed as a form of argument or debate here, but just sharing information with fellow hobbyist including your goodself. ;)

Okie..guess they have a very large geographical distribution just like harlequin shrimps. ;)

Think whether they are holding pom poms is really a random thing. If they can't find any small anemones to detach then they might go around '######'? I have a friend that kept one holding anemones before. The anemones died later on and his crab became '######'. Mine so far still has anemones. :)

 Hi, not sure  if this helps but just to let you know that in Singapore, we have an academic who is a world authority on crabs :yeah::yeah: None other than Prof. Peter Ng from the NUS Ecology Lab.(My lecturer in U days)...I think can pose him this question and he'll be happy to answer. For those not sure about him, he is an editor of the series of mini BP nature guide books.

lemme get this straight. The anemone crab you guys are talking about are actually crabs with anemone?

If so, how did the anemone get on top of the crab?

Crab:"yo.. wanna hitch a ride?"

anemone:"sure, why not....wwooo weee!!"

When the anemone grows, how is the crab gonna cope with the weight? I believe crabs grows slower than anemones.

NoNo...the crabs hold the anemones in their pincers for defense. Only putting them down when they are moulting. After which they quickly pick them up again.

I prefer talking to Prof Chou compared to Prof. Peter Ng. The former is more open minded and helpful.. That's my personal view.
