Overskim or Underskim?

Recommended Posts

Dear all fellow forumers,

I have a 45 gallons set up being planned and have decided to go for a JNS ConeS Skimmer after taking a look at its specifications.

The model that I'm looking at is the CO-1. Its rated for up to 200 gallons while its larger cousin, the CO-2 is rated up to 350 gallons.

I am still torn between these 2 models and the effectiveness and difference it would make and contribute to the system. Anyone could chim in with regards to the difference? I would most probably be looking at a mixed reef setup and to gain some experience before moving onto the more demanding candy canes and sticks.

That being said, I am still a firm believer in water changes and that having a large skimmer would not eliminate the chore of doing it B)

I know its still a relatively new skimmer on the market but however after seeing it in action at Ah Bengs' and the some of the reviews on RC, I couldn't help but to bite the bullet. ;)

Cheers!

Strong believer of overskim If space and budget allow. The skimmer should allow water lvl adjustment to ensure it is not sensitive to water lvl. How fast to fill the cup, if u set wet skimming, yr cup will fill ip in no time.

Maybe I should rephrase and be more specific in my question.

"Am I skimming enough"

Since the total volume of my DT with the sump will probably add up to 80 odd gallons while the CO-1 is rated for up to 200 gallons. I'm sure this is considered over-skimming

LPS such as hammer is more nutrient tolerant to nitrate... but even at high nitrate level, it will impede the potential to extend their polyps and growth. Nutrients such as phosphate and silicate not only fuel algae growth, but also prevent calcification of corals. ie they stop growing.

Go for it. My only concern is the trace element. Since u are doing water change. That will be fine :)

CO-1 should be sufficient given that it's already 2.5X your water volume. Apparently, there can be issues if you overskim too much since the skimmer doesn't have enough organics to develop a decent head.

The only issue with the CO-1 is if you decide to upgrade. BTW, if you don't mind me asking, how much do the two models cost?
