Really nice bright orange/reddish colors. Will update the survey once within your categories.

SRC Member Acanthurus pyroferus Posted February 9, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted February 9, 2004 Bought 2 flame scallops but found them missing the next day......... When I was rescaping my LR a bit found both attached to rocks hiding in the shade doing well. Is that their natural behaviour....

When I was rescaping my LR a bit found both attached to rocks hiding in the shade doing well. Is that their natural behaviour.... yes.. they do not like lights. So getting these scallops mean you have to live with them hiding most of the time.. unless like someone here said before, epoxy them somewhere.. .... just joking.. SRC Member Nickel Posted February 9, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted February 9, 2004 No need pics (actually I dun have a DC), as previous owner of them, you are welcome to see it live in action at my place. I normally update those previous masters of my LS to ensure they knows (if they are interested/responsible owners) their LS are in good hands. They actually propel themselves to a place they are comfortable and extend an 'arm' at their back and anchor themselves there. If condition changes, they will move again. Nickel...thought mine was particularly strange when they didn't come out. Found it deeper in the LR this time very hard to notice.
SRC Member Nickel Posted February 9, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted February 9, 2004 Ya, know what you mean. I have one that decided best location is between 2 rocks. but can still see it opening and the tentacles swaying in the waves. And it is upright as like a clam. Maybe split personality. I had prepared a 'cave' for one of them and is happy there since day 1. Question for experienced scallop owners : does the frequency/brightness of the electric flashes anything to indicate their health/mood ? SRC Member arcanehacker Posted February 9, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted February 9, 2004 since its not an easy feeder. What do you people feed these scallops? FuEl
Glad to know this poll has stirred up so much interest. Ok..here's my experience. I placed 2 flame scallops at opposite ends of my tank. Then one day both of them found each other at the center cave and have been together since. So far been surviving for about 5 months already. Mainly attribute it to my dosing of phyto, spirulina and my undergravel plate. I would guess alot of things are reproducing under my U.G plates that I use to prop the rocks up. Was meant to be a plenum...but ditched the idea after considering the thickness of my tank. To judge whether a flame scallop is slowly starving is simple. Look at the interior of the shell...if you can notice the red flesh getting less and less and you can partly see the shell..then chances are that the scallop is not doing well. FuEl
No..scallops don't sting. They are filter feeders. Quote Always something more important than fish. http://reefbuilders.com/2012/03/08/sps-pico-reef/
