MY NEW 3 FT MARINE AQUARIUM

canister and top filter both considered useless in marine tank.. hehe

a skimmer will do the job.

try to throw a bag of activated carbon into your tank. should be able to remove the smell.

But I'm keeping a few fishes only. So I dont think I'll be getting a skimmer. Where can I get a bag of those carbon?

Aim and achieve.

Even with 1 (ONE) fish, and the need to feed the fish, u will still need the skimmer... U dun buy a bag of carbon... U buy carbon and put it in a filter bag and put in ur sump...

To sum it up, u still need a skimmer...

Just my 2 cents…

Please get a SKIMMER… 2nd hand or China brand (if you are on budget)… With so much dying off, I guess skimming off some gunk will definitely help with the smell. Long term it is definitely beneficial.

Adding a wave maker is definitely a GOOD move.

You may hold off adding the sump for the moment.

Lookout for the following;

1. Diatoms

2. Hair algae

3. Pods

4. Bubbles inside your sand

These are indicators that your tank has reached different stages of the cycling. Of course, the more scientific way is to test the water… IMHO, test kit may say something but your eyes don't lie (e.g. test kit may say Nitrate/Phosphate low but you may have an algae problem!)

Totally agree that you should enjoy the process… :)

There's some white stuff growing on my live rocks. And I think the wave maker is too strong.. fish cant really swim when I on it. And it will blow the whole tank till alot of tiny air bubbles going around the tank.

It is a sunsun wavemaker JVP-201.

12W power and the output is 6000L/hr. Will it work fine for my 3ft tank?

Aim and achieve.

You may like to take a picture and post here for a good answer. My guess is that some hitchhikers in the live rocks died (e.g. sponge/corals/invertebrates/snails/slugs…etc) and caused the white stuff which should look like cobweb or fungus.

As for your wave maker, try aiming it diagonally across. You mentioned you have a canister filter, aim the output of your canister filter at your wave maker to counter the current. The will indirectly reduce the power of your wave maker.

Hope this help… :P

Hi Bro up to this stage, I doubt you understand the whole process of proper cycling of fish tank ( freshwater or marine ) and the various developing stages of each type of beneficial bacteria. Please do more reading on how to set up and cycle an aquarium in this forum and any oversea site.

Bro Dreams, the smell must be terrible huh..? 1. Remove dead crabs and worms from the tank. 2. Check salinity for 1.025. Mark the water level on glass and remember to top up with distilled water due to evaporation. 3. Let the canister filter and wavemaker run. 4. Off the lights. Don't do anything else except do water top-up for one month. Meantime, while waiting for the tank to fully cycled read up on setup marine aquarium. Your tank is not suitable for marine but its ok some of us started with the same type of tank... U will probably upgrade later down the road. Happy reefing :)

Thanks bro, i've removed all the dead worms etc and sprayed some air freshener too. Not so bad now. My salanity is 1.023 used up all my salt already :( .

1.023 is fine for now because after cycled you need to change 20% water with fresh salt mixed water. You can increase to 1.025 then. Meantime, remember to top up evaporated water. Get a bottle of bacteria and pour into the tank it will speed up the cycle. Most important thing is to be patient. Happy reefing.

Tot you already have fishes inside? U just had a massive die off. No matter how much bacteria u add. Ur tank is never going to be read for fish in a week. At least 3 to 4 weeks before u can add fishes. If you really want the best for the fishes. Leave them alone for the time being.

The only way to determine when your cycle ends is to test for the ANN spikes and recessions. By estimating a time frame for cycle to complete is not advisable.

i am still wondering how come even the worm or crab is dying in your tank?

i start my tank with live rock with free crabs "some i was able to see and remove, but some able to get thru in my tank, and now i am slowly catching them up" i mean they did not die ;)

try put demsel, lol they will not die, unless your tank parameters is too polluted that is why even crab/worm die :)

Sorry to bring this up but thought thats a very good mindset to go with.. every fish is still a life right? Lets treat each fish purchase with responsibility k?

i think this is breakthrough if you found the reason, i dont like worms too, next time we can copy what you do that makes the worms die, easier than catching the worms lol....

Haha definitely. I think either its too low on salanity or the bacteria that I added into the tank caused the worms to die.. lol

Well, it's a better way to get some banded shrimp to kill the worms... Using your water parameters to kill such a hardy thing like worms is actually not that wise. Whatever that is harming the worms in your water parameters may be harming your beloved livestock too..

does shrimp eat algae too?

will they not disturb the corals and or bite the fish when sleeping?
