Biopellets in TLF FR Clumping Together

Anyone using TLF FR with Biopellets? The biopellets in the FR will clump and stick together every couple of months and it makes the biopellets inefficient. Have reduced the amount of biopellets down to only 3cm height but still clumping occurs. My FR is modified with the add-on mesh for biopellets...

Any idea why is this so?

Any other FR don't have this issue?

thanks in advance

This is mainly due to bacteria film generated from the bio pallet when it melts. This is also the reason why there is reactor cater specially for the bio pallet which tumble / move the bio pallets in various ways to prevent such clumping.

Take out the mesh on top of the FR and wash it , it will helps since most likely the mesh is cloak . Alternatively try consider running a bio pallet rector in future. HTH :)

I clean up just last week but didnt clean the sponge

Hi bro,

I have the same problem too so I replaced it with Enductor Fluidized Reactor- FR30. IMHO, TLF initial design is mean for running po4 and carbon media so my advice is better use bio-reactor instead.

bro, I agree with you too. It is kinda modified to accommodate the use with biopellet.

Is Enductor a brand? Where can I find this... thanks!

If you check out these video here, you will be able to see the different how the bio pallet tumble as compare to a normal reactor . This is to prevent it from clumping together.

Hi everyone. Thanks for helping me out.

Does anyone know which FR is similar in size to the TLF? My sump is small. Don't really have much choices

There is a junior size inductor bio pallet reactor available at Madpetz maybe you can go take a look.

Actually i was previously using the TLF Phosban reactor for biopellets as well and if i remembered correctly, it is actually advised in the manual to turn up the flow weekly to prevent the clumping from happening... I used it for couple of months with no issues...

Also u might wanna check the flow size cos i remembered TLF suggested smthg like 300+ gallon per hour for use with bio pellet

:: just a noob ::

I have tried TLF150 running bio-pellet with 1500l/h pump before and it still clumping after 1-2 mths so now use it to run rowaphos instead.

Bro you are right! Out of curiosity, I channel about 2000L flow into the TLF yesterday to give it a try.

I reduced my biopellet into just 1cm height and gave it a good stir. It did tumble barely but within 1 hour, all biopellet clump together again :angry2: It seems like these biopellet that already being used for some time has a sticky layer on them making them clump easily.

Hey bro. Jeff.

I recall there is a video on YouTube shows how to modify tlf fr for bio Pellet. You May give it a try.

Thanks bro. If I am not wrong, that video shows an addition of a plastic mesh to the TLF FR. I added that already.... still the same.

Maybe there are other solutions out there. Let me do some more research

Gosh, a wild idea just came up to my mind after watching this video!

I may still be able to use back my TLF after all. :superman:

Why not right since you still have your FR. Please share with this after your modification if it works.

Tried the method in the video! Din cut anything tho. The whole idea is that the inlet pipe must not touch e bottom of the canister. Therefore, I silicon e short pipe to the cover pipe. Flip the longer pipe upside down and run the pump and this is what I get..

I came across something similar as I do more research.

Something I don't understand on silicon e short pipe to the cover pipe. Flip the longer pipe upside down

Does this mean, you have two red plastic mesh touching each other? You simply flip the long pipe over and attach it to the upper red mesh?

How long did you use this with no clumping problem? TIA!
